 Abuja Dialogue 2026 has called for a deliberate and structured approach to youth leadership, stressing that Nigeria’s future depends on building systems that develop and sustain young leaders within governance.

Eko Hot News reports that The high-level engagement was convened by the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy in partnership with the Office of the Vice President. It was held at the State House Banquet Hall and brought together government officials, private sector leaders, development partners, and emerging leaders.

Participants focused on repositioning youth leadership as a critical component of national development. The Dialogue emphasised that leadership must be intentionally nurtured through systems that ensure continuity, inclusion, and measurable impact.

Delivering the keynote, Vice President Kashim Shettima highlighted the need to convert Nigeria’s large youth population into institutional strength. He stated that youth leadership should not be left to evolve naturally but must be guided through structured development processes.

Also speaking, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the Dialogue as a significant step toward expanding leadership conversations nationwide. He noted that what began as a Lagos initiative is now gaining national relevance and momentum.

Sanwo-Olu added that the engagement signals a shift in focus, placing youth leadership at the centre of national discourse. He said it also serves as a foundation for broader discussions ahead of the Lagos Leadership Summit 2026.

In his remarks, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia stressed the importance of translating youth leadership ideas into practical outcomes. He explained that strengthening governance requires equipping young people with the right tools and opportunities.

The Executive Secretary of the Academy, Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, reinforced the need for intentional leadership development. She noted that effective governance depends on identifying and preparing future leaders through well-designed systems.

A key feature of the Dialogue was its interactive format, which encouraged active participation. Panel discussions, fireside chats, and audience engagement sessions provided platforms for stakeholders to share ideas and explore practical solutions.

The Audience Dialogue segment enabled direct conversations among policymakers, legislators, and young leaders. This approach strengthened collaboration and ensured that discussions remained focused on actionable outcomes.

Across all sessions, participants agreed on the need to move beyond recognising youth potential to building sustainable frameworks. The emphasis was on creating systems that make leadership development continuous and impactful.
