DSVA Holds Awareness Campaign on SGBV in Somolu Communities

 The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has conducted a community engagement programme in Somolu to educate residents on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

Eko Hot News reports that the sensitisation session brought together members of 12 Community Development Associations (CDAs), including Ijobu-Tedo, SakSak, Layo-Otegbaade, Boshua, Aoolta, Aroda, Irebamisi, Apata, Onaolapo, Boshua West, Ifesowapo, and Agbajowo. The initiative aimed to strengthen grassroots awareness and promote safer communities.

The programme began with a welcome address by the CDC Chairman, Telia Tajudeen, who commended DSVA for its ongoing commitment to community safety and public enlightenment across Lagos State.

Representatives of the Agency, including Bunmi Amosu and Richard Akanbi, spoke on behalf of the Executive Secretary. They highlighted DSVA’s mission to reduce and prevent cases of gender-based violence through education and advocacy.

Participants were educated on different forms of sexual violence and child abuse. The session also covered legal provisions and penalties designed to protect individuals and ensure accountability under the law.

The representatives emphasised the importance of awareness in preventing abuse and encouraging early reporting. They noted that informed communities are better equipped to identify and respond to such issues effectively.

Community members were also guided on available reporting channels. These include the Family Support Unit (FSU), Primary Health Care Centres, and other support services provided by DSVA to assist affected individuals.

The engagement encouraged residents to take collective responsibility for promoting safety and protecting vulnerable groups within their communities. It also highlighted the role of local leaders in sustaining awareness efforts.

Participants actively engaged in discussions, asking questions and sharing perspectives on how to improve community response systems. The interactive format allowed for better understanding and collaboration.

The session concluded with appreciation from CDA representatives, who commended DSVA for bringing the initiative closer to the grassroots. They acknowledged the importance of continuous sensitisation in building a safer society.
