The Lagos State Government has launched a three-day training programme to equip secondary school teachers with skills in digital pedagogy and artificial intelligence.
Eko Hot News reports that the initiative, organised through the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), brings together selected teachers from the six education districts and the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB).
The workshop, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Hall, highlights the state’s commitment to improving teaching methods through modern technology.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Tolani Ali-Balogun, described the training as timely, noting that education systems globally are adapting rapidly to technological advancement.
Ali-Balogun urged teachers to integrate digital tools, artificial intelligence, and problem-solving techniques into their classrooms.

He emphasised the need for educators to stay updated with evolving teaching strategies in order to remain effective and relevant in today’s learning environment.
He further explained that the programme aligns with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly its focus on Education and Technology.
According to him, continuous capacity development for teachers is key to strengthening the overall quality of education in Lagos State.
Also speaking, the Chairman of TESCOM, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, described the training as more than just learning to use digital tools. She said it represents a shift from traditional teacher-centred instruction to a learner-centred approach where students actively participate in their learning process.
Peregrino noted that the programme is designed to enhance teachers’ creativity and encourage innovative teaching methods. She added that the adoption of artificial intelligence in classrooms will help educators explore new ways to deliver lessons effectively and improve student engagement.

She encouraged participants to maximise the opportunity by applying the knowledge gained and sharing it with colleagues across their schools. According to her, the goal is to create a ripple effect that will positively impact classrooms, schools, and communities across the state.
The TESCOM chairman also highlighted the importance of ethical considerations in the use of technology.
She advised teachers to remain mindful of data privacy and responsible use of digital tools while integrating artificial intelligence into their teaching practices.

Peregrino reassured participants that artificial intelligence is not a replacement for teachers but a support system designed to enhance their effectiveness. She stressed that the role of teachers remains central in shaping students into digitally literate, adaptable, and forward-thinking individuals.
The training is expected to strengthen teaching capacity, improve learning outcomes, and position Lagos as a leader in education innovation. It also reflects the state government’s broader commitment to preparing both teachers and students for a technology-driven future.
