The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, has said that a standardised gastronomy sector will play a significant role in accelerating tourism growth and strengthening Lagos’ position as Africa’s leading cultural destination.
Eko Hot News reports that Mr. Aregbe made the remark while participating in the 2026 Nigeria Food Summit Press Conference held at the Hard Rock Cafe Lagos. The event brought together stakeholders from the food, hospitality, tourism and creative industries to discuss the future of Nigeria’s culinary sector.
The summit was held under the theme, “Gastronomy in Nigeria: Journey to Standardization.” Discussions focused on improving quality standards, promoting innovation and enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigeria’s food industry.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Aregbe said standardising the country’s gastronomy sector would strengthen Nigeria’s culinary identity while creating new opportunities for tourism and economic growth. He noted that quality assurance remains essential for building confidence among consumers, investors and visitors.
According to him, Lagos is committed to promoting its rich culinary heritage as part of a broader strategy to expand tourism and showcase the state’s cultural diversity. He said food tourism continues to emerge as an important driver of destination marketing across the world.
The Special Adviser explained that a structured and standardised food industry would encourage local businesses to improve quality, embrace best practices and compete more effectively in regional and international markets.
He also noted that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, particularly in the areas of entrepreneurship, economic growth, job creation and sustainable development.
Mr. Aregbe emphasised that collaboration among government institutions, private sector operators and industry professionals is vital to achieving a globally recognised gastronomy sector. He encouraged stakeholders to work together in developing standards that promote excellence.
Participants at the summit explored ways to improve food safety, strengthen quality control and encourage innovation throughout the food value chain. They also discussed strategies for increasing the visibility of Nigerian cuisine in international markets.
Industry experts highlighted the growing importance of gastronomy tourism as travellers increasingly seek authentic culinary experiences when visiting new destinations. They noted that food culture has become a major attraction in many leading tourism cities around the world.
Stakeholders agreed that Nigeria possesses a rich and diverse culinary heritage capable of attracting international attention. They said consistent standards and effective promotion would help unlock greater economic opportunities for local businesses.
The conference also examined how investment in food entrepreneurship can support small and medium-sized enterprises while creating employment opportunities for young people. Participants encouraged continued partnerships that will strengthen the hospitality and tourism industries.
Officials reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote creativity, innovation and cultural excellence. They noted that developing the gastronomy sector complements broader efforts to position Lagos as a preferred destination for tourism, entertainment and business.
Mr. Aregbe expressed optimism that the recommendations from the summit would contribute to the long-term growth of Nigeria’s food industry and further enhance Lagos’ reputation as a centre for culture, hospitality and tourism.
The event concluded with stakeholders renewing their commitment to advancing quality standards, encouraging investment and promoting Nigeria’s unique culinary identity as a valuable contributor to tourism development and economic prosperity.
