The Lagos State Government has commenced the construction of a Workers’ Village at Ajasa, Command, in the Ipaja area of the state as part of its ongoing efforts to expand access to affordable housing for residents.
Eko Hot News reports that the new housing development will comprise 11 blocks of one- and two-bedroom apartments, providing a total of 176 housing units. The estate will also feature modern infrastructure designed to improve the quality of living for beneficiaries.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to increasing the supply of affordable homes, particularly for the working population.
According to the commissioner, the Workers’ Village will contribute to addressing the state’s housing needs while supporting the administration’s vision of making quality housing more accessible to Lagos residents.
Hon. Akinderu-Fatai, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, and members of the ministry’s technical team, also inspected the ongoing Egan-Igando Housing Scheme.
The Egan-Igando project comprises 636 residential units and is designed as a modern community with supporting infrastructure. Planned facilities include a football pitch, tennis court, shopping mall, solar-powered water filtration system and retail outlets.
The commissioner urged contractors handling the projects to accelerate work and meet approved timelines. He explained that timely completion would enable the government to prepare the housing schemes for commissioning.
He noted that the inspection exercise forms part of the ministry’s routine monitoring programme aimed at ensuring construction quality and compliance with approved standards.
According to him, regular site visits help government officials assess project progress, identify areas requiring attention and ensure that every development meets expected specifications.
The inspection team also visited the Beacon Estate at Ipaja, a joint venture between the Lagos State Government and a private developer. The estate includes 126 housing units made up of ongoing two-bedroom apartments and completed three-bedroom homes.
Hon. Akinderu-Fatai reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering housing projects that align with the development goals of the Sanwo-Olu administration. He said every project is designed to improve residents’ living standards while supporting the vision of a Greater Lagos.
The commissioner assured Lagosians that homes under the LagosHOMS scheme will remain affordable, especially for low-income earners. He explained that beneficiaries will have access to homes at rates below prevailing market prices.
He added that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains committed to making home ownership more accessible through policies that reduce the financial burden on prospective homeowners.
Hon. Akinderu-Fatai also encouraged private sector investors to partner with the government by developing affordable housing projects that meet the needs of low- and middle-income residents.
He said stronger collaboration between government and private developers will help bridge the housing deficit while expanding access to decent accommodation across Lagos State.
The commissioner disclosed that all the housing projects inspected are expected to be completed before the end of the year, subject to continued compliance with approved project schedules and quality standards.
He further assured residents that the Ministry of Housing will maintain close supervision of all ongoing developments to ensure contractors deliver quality work in line with government expectations.
The Lagos State Government reiterated that affordable housing remains one of its major priorities as it continues to invest in modern residential communities that promote sustainable urban development and improve the quality of life for citizens.
