Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers in Lagos State as part of efforts to support workers amid current economic conditions.

Eko Hot News reports that the governor announced the wage award during the International Workers’ Day celebration held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Friday. He was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.

According to the governor, the ₦50,000 wage award will apply to all workers for the month of May. He explained that the decision was made to help cushion the impact of rising living costs and economic pressures.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the state government is aware of challenges such as increased fuel prices and global economic trends. He said the wage support is aimed at providing relief and maintaining the wellbeing of workers.

The governor commended public servants for their dedication and contribution to the growth of Lagos. He described workers as the backbone of the state’s development and a key factor in its continued progress.

He emphasised that Lagos thrives because of the commitment of its workforce, including teachers, healthcare professionals, artisans, and civil servants. According to him, their daily efforts sustain the state’s economic and social systems.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the housing challenges faced by many workers. He noted that the government is actively addressing the issue through ongoing investments in affordable housing projects.

He disclosed that thousands of housing units have already been completed, with more expected before the end of 2026. The governor added that these projects are designed to improve living conditions for residents.

The governor highlighted the state’s rent-to-own housing scheme, which requires only a five percent initial payment. He explained that the flexible repayment structure is intended to make home ownership more accessible to workers.

On transportation, Sanwo-Olu said the government has continued to expand rail infrastructure across the state. He noted that the rail system has already transported millions of passengers and will be further enhanced with additional coaches.

He added that improved transportation is essential for boosting productivity and easing daily commuting for workers. The government remains committed to expanding options that support efficient movement across Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu also stated that pension payments to retirees have been sustained. He assured that the welfare of pensioners remains a priority for the administration.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining open communication with organised labour. He emphasised the importance of dialogue in addressing workers’ concerns and strengthening cooperation.
