The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and the Office of Environmental Services, has organised a sensitisation programme on road safety and climate change for teachers and students across the six Education Districts in Lagos State.

Eko Hot News reports that the one-day programme was held at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium and brought together participants from public schools to promote awareness on transportation safety, environmental sustainability, and responsible citizenship.

Delivering the keynote address, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, stressed the need to equip students with the right values and practical knowledge on road safety and environmental stewardship.

He noted that Lagos, being a coastal city, experiences the effects of climate change daily, including flooding, heatwaves, and rising sea levels, urging students to adopt sustainable practices such as reducing, reusing, and recycling waste materials.

According to him, the Lagos State Government remains committed to building an inclusive and modern society by raising informed, responsible, and safety-conscious young people who can positively influence their communities.

Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holistic education beyond classroom learning.

She described the sensitisation programme as a call to action aimed at building safer communities, encouraging environmental consciousness, and empowering students with life-saving knowledge.

Dokunmu-Adegbite added that the future of Lagos depends largely on how well the younger generation understands and responds to societal and environmental challenges.
