The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has recorded the evacuation of more than 18,660 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste within one week, following significant operational improvements at the Olusosun Disposal Facility.
Eko Hot News reports that the Authority also recorded a sharp increase in operations at the Olusosun Disposal Facility after rehabilitating the access road and opening additional waste disposal platforms to improve service delivery.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed the achievement during an operations review meeting held at the Authority’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa.
He said the Authority completed 1,866 truck trips across its disposal facilities between July 28 and August 3, 2026, describing the performance as a reflection of the positive impact of strategic infrastructure investments.
According to Dr. Gbadegesin, the Olusosun Disposal Facility alone recorded 1,012 truck trips during the review period.
He explained that the figure represents an increase of 438 truck trips compared to the 574 truck trips recorded in the previous week, translating to an operational improvement of more than 76 per cent.
The LAWMA boss attributed the increase to the successful rehabilitation of the Olusosun access road and the creation of additional waste disposal platforms.
He noted that the intervention has significantly improved access to the facility, reduced waiting time for waste trucks, accelerated turnaround time, and strengthened waste evacuation across Lagos State.
Dr. Gbadegesin stated that the improved performance demonstrates the value of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s continued investment in critical waste management infrastructure.
He said the infrastructure upgrade has effectively addressed operational challenges that previously slowed waste evacuation, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.
According to him, the Authority achieved its highest daily operational performance on August 1, when 349 truck trips processed an estimated 3,490 metric tonnes of waste across various disposal facilities.
He explained that the Ewu-Elepe, Badagry, and Oke-Osho disposal facilities, alongside the Waste-to-Wealth Material Recovery Facility (WAE MRF) in Igando, continued to complement operations at Olusosun.
The facilities, he said, have played an important role in ensuring efficient waste evacuation across different parts of Lagos.
Dr. Gbadegesin noted that the steady rise in operational performance confirms that investment in modern infrastructure delivers measurable improvements in public service.
He added that faster truck turnaround and improved accessibility have strengthened LAWMA’s capacity to provide more efficient waste collection and disposal services.
The Managing Director disclosed that the Authority would continue building on the recent achievements through additional infrastructure projects.
He revealed that LAWMA is currently constructing modern Transfer Loading Stations to improve waste transportation and logistics across the state.
The Authority is also expanding waste recovery infrastructure to encourage recycling and reduce dependence on landfill disposal.
Dr. Gbadegesin further disclosed that LAWMA is advancing plans for waste-to-energy projects, which will support cleaner waste management while contributing to sustainable energy development.
He added that the Authority intends to acquire additional compactor trucks to further strengthen waste collection and improve operational efficiency across Lagos.
According to him, these initiatives form part of the Lagos State Government’s broader strategy to modernise waste management and improve environmental sustainability.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to supporting Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision of transitioning from a landfill-dependent waste management system to an integrated and sustainable circular economy.
