Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem to strengthen food security.
Eko Hot News reports that the Governor made this known during the Future of Agriculture Conference held in Lagos.
The conference was organised by BusinessDay Newspaper at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island.
Sanwo-Olu described the gathering as a vital platform for shaping solutions to Nigeria’s agricultural challenges.
He noted that rising food demand and increasing prices require urgent and coordinated action.
The Governor emphasised that achieving food security depends on strengthening every stage of the agricultural value chain.
He described the process as a “seed to feed” approach that must be properly developed and sustained.
Sanwo-Olu commended BusinessDay Newspaper for its role in driving meaningful economic discussions over the years.

He stated that such platforms are essential for generating practical ideas and long-term strategies.
The Governor was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya.
She noted that Lagos plays a critical role as one of Nigeria’s largest food consumption hubs.
According to her, the state depends heavily on a strong and efficient national agricultural system.
Sanwo-Olu outlined three key priorities for transforming the sector.
These include innovation, strategic partnerships and effective value chain development.
He stressed that modern agriculture must adopt technology to improve productivity and efficiency.
This includes the use of precision farming tools and digital platforms for market access.
The Governor highlighted the importance of collaboration across sectors to achieve lasting results.

He explained that government efforts must be supported by private investors and development partners.
Researchers and financial institutions were also identified as key contributors to agricultural growth.
Addressing post-harvest challenges, Sanwo-Olu pointed to the need for better infrastructure.
He said improvements in storage, processing and transportation are essential to reduce losses.
Efficient distribution systems, he added, are just as important as production itself.
The Governor also called for increased support for smallholder farmers across the country.
He emphasised access to quality inputs, funding opportunities and reliable markets.
Sanwo-Olu noted that empowering farmers is critical to ensuring a stable food supply.

He further highlighted the importance of climate-smart agricultural practices.
According to him, sustainable farming methods will help protect the environment and improve yields.
The Governor encouraged stakeholders to move beyond discussions and take practical steps.
He urged participants to leave the conference with clear commitments and actionable plans.
“The journey from seed to feed requires coordination and sustained effort,” he stated.
He added that strengthening agriculture will positively impact other sectors of the economy.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote food security.
The conference ended with a renewed focus on collaboration and innovation in the agricultural sector.
