Lagos Reaffirms Drive Toward Smart City Transformation

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging innovation, science, and technology to strengthen governance and improve public service delivery across the state.

Eko Hot News reports that the Honourable Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, made this known during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa.

Alake said the government is focused on positioning Lagos as Africa’s leading smart city through sustained digital transformation initiatives.

He noted that the Ministry has recorded significant progress in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital governance, and smart city development.

According to him, Lagos is deploying technology-driven solutions to improve efficiency in public administration and enhance citizens’ quality of life.

Under the Safe City initiative, the state has strengthened digital surveillance and traffic enforcement systems across key locations.

Officials disclosed that the Intelligent Transport System has recorded over 737,000 traffic violations, improving compliance and road safety.

The Commissioner also highlighted the ongoing Enterprise Architecture project aimed at digitising government operations across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

He stated that 192 out of 211 MDAs have been evaluated, with over 232 application workloads captured to standardise government processes.

Alake added that the Lagos State Digital Service Platform now records over 250,000 monthly users accessing government services online.

The state has also introduced Artificial Intelligence guidelines and launched an AI-powered chatbot to enhance e-governance and service delivery.

He explained that these innovations are designed to improve responsiveness, reduce service delays, and modernise public administration.

Lagos continues to strengthen its innovation ecosystem through initiatives such as the Art of Technology (AOT) Conference.

The event has attracted global stakeholders, fostering collaboration on innovation, funding, and digital policy development.

On cybersecurity, the Commissioner said Lagos has improved its cyber resilience through awareness programmes and strategic digital protection systems.

He also disclosed that 109 Data Protection Officers have been deployed across government institutions to ensure compliance with data protection standards.

In the area of science education, Alake confirmed the completion of the Science Experience Centre to promote STEM learning among students.

He praised Lagos students who performed well in national science competitions, describing their achievements as evidence of government investment in education and innovation.

The Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC) has supported over 75 startups and facilitated more than ₦900 million in research funding.

The Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) has also registered over 6.4 million residents under the state’s identity management system.

Officials say the initiative supports planning, governance, and improved service delivery across all sectors.

The state government reiterated its commitment under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to building a technologically advanced and globally competitive Lagos.

The administration says continued investment in innovation and digital infrastructure remains central to its long-term development agenda.
