The Lagos State Government has announced the immediate closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge leading to Lagos Island for urgent repair and safety inspection works.

Eko Hot News reports that the closure will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as authorities begin critical structural assessments on the bridge to improve safety for motorists and commuters.

The announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who explained that the affected section is the outbound carriageway heading toward Lagos Island.

According to the commissioner, the inward lane moving away from Lagos Island will remain accessible to road users throughout the repair period.

The state government said the temporary closure became necessary to allow engineers carry out detailed inspections and essential maintenance works on the bridge infrastructure.

Motorists approaching from Apongbon and Ijora Olopa have been advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route to reduce delays and ease traffic movement.

Traffic management officials and security personnel are expected to be stationed along diversion points and adjoining roads to assist commuters and maintain smooth vehicular flow.

Osiyemi assured residents that adequate arrangements had been made to manage traffic around the affected corridors during the repair exercise.

He noted that traffic officers would continue monitoring key routes to minimize congestion and support motorists navigating alternative roads.

The closure is expected to temporarily affect movement around Lagos Island and nearby areas as commuters adjust to the new traffic arrangements.

Residents and motorists have also been urged to cooperate with traffic officials and follow directional signs to ensure orderly movement during the maintenance period.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving road infrastructure and ensuring the safety of all road users across the state.
