The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board has recorded a major milestone with the signing of a 10-year financial sustainability plan designed to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the state.
Eko Hot News reports that the initiative, tagged “Lagos State Primary Health Care Compact 2026,” was introduced as a long-term framework to support sustainable healthcare financing and improve access to quality healthcare services for residents.
The agreement represents a collaborative commitment between the Lagos State Government, the 20 Local Government Areas, and the 37 Local Council Development Areas across the state.
Officials described the compact as a significant step toward improving healthcare coordination, funding stability, and service delivery within communities.
The landmark agreement was signed during a two-day retreat held at Lakowe and organised by the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board alongside Conference 57, the World Bank-supported IMPACT Programme, Engender, and other development partners.
The retreat provided an avenue for discussions, policy engagement, and strategic planning among stakeholders focused on the future of primary healthcare financing in Lagos State.
Participants at the event examined practical approaches to sustaining healthcare funding and strengthening service delivery at the grassroots level.

The agreement followed extensive consultations with health stakeholders, council chairmen, and government representatives who expressed strong support for the implementation of the initiative.
Council chairmen from the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs reaffirmed their commitment to supporting stronger primary healthcare systems within their respective communities.
Observers at the ceremony described the signing as a reflection of unity, collaboration, and shared responsibility among all levels of government in Lagos State.
Representing the state government at the event was the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, who highlighted the importance of sustainable healthcare financing in achieving long-term development goals.
Also present was the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Kemi Ogunyemi, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa.
The officials noted that the compact would help strengthen intergovernmental collaboration while improving healthcare accessibility and efficiency across the state.
According to stakeholders, the 10-year plan is expected to support people-centered healthcare services and improve healthcare outcomes for residents in both urban and rural communities.

The initiative is also designed to encourage accountability, resource planning, and effective healthcare management at the local government level.
Health experts at the retreat stressed the importance of consistent investment in primary healthcare as a foundation for a healthier population and stronger economic growth.
Development partners involved in the programme commended Lagos State for prioritising healthcare sustainability and building partnerships that support long-term progress.
The healthcare compact aligns with the Lagos State Government’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which identifies healthcare as a major pillar for social development and improved living standards.

Officials added that the initiative is also in line with the Lagos State Development Plan 2052, which focuses on inclusive growth and improved quality of life for residents.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the plan would strengthen healthcare systems, improve service delivery, and ensure greater access to affordable healthcare services across Lagos State.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to investing in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, and policies that promote the wellbeing of residents.
Observers believe the compact will serve as a model for sustainable healthcare financing and collaboration among government institutions in Nigeria.
