Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents of Badagry to uphold and preserve the legacy of the late Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I.
Eko Hot News reports that the Governor made this appeal during the funeral outing thanksgiving service held in honour of the revered monarch at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral on Saturday.
The solemn gathering drew notable dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and Secretary to the State Government Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin. Members of the State Executive Council, political leaders, traditional rulers, and family members of the late monarch were also in attendance.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the late Akran as a symbol of unity and wisdom. He noted that the monarch’s leadership style reflected fairness, calmness, and dedication to his people throughout his reign.
He said the palace of the late monarch remained accessible to all, serving as a place where issues were addressed with clarity and justice. According to him, the monarch’s presence was a guiding force within the Badagry community.

Following the church service, the Governor performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I Cultural Park in Badagry. The project is aimed at preserving the history and cultural heritage of the kingdom.
Sanwo-Olu stated that the late monarch’s name would remain significant in the history of Lagos State. He described his reign as one marked by peace, dignity, and strong cultural identity.
The Governor encouraged the people of Badagry to continue building on the foundation laid by the late king. He stressed the importance of preserving historical monuments and promoting the cultural values of the community.
He noted that the monarch dedicated his life to service, describing him as a teacher, journalist, statesman, and traditional ruler who served his people faithfully for decades.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the monarch’s role in the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. He said the late Akran was respected for his thoughtful contributions and calm approach to leadership.

The Governor extended condolences to the royal family and the entire Badagry Kingdom. He assured them of the state government’s support and encouraged them to uphold the values left behind by the monarch.
Speaking further, he described the late Akran as a leader whose decisions were guided by love for his people. He added that the monarch’s long reign of forty-eight years reflected stability and commitment.
In his sermon, Sunday Ola Makinde highlighted the virtues of the late king. He described him as a hospitable leader who maintained strong ties with his people and remained devoted to his faith.
Makinde noted that the monarch’s life reflected dedication to service and humility. He encouraged attendees to draw inspiration from the values demonstrated during his lifetime.

The cleric also commended the Lagos State Government for ongoing infrastructure development. He referenced projects such as the rail lines and road expansion initiatives as signs of progress in the state.
He further called for continued support for national infrastructure projects, including the proposed Badagry-Sokoto Expressway. According to him, such developments will enhance connectivity and economic growth.
Residents of Badagry were urged to remain united and committed to preserving their heritage. Community leaders emphasized the need to sustain the cultural identity of the ancient town.
