The Lagos Wastewater Management Campaign has received a major boost as the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) ramps up its statewide sensitisation across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to promote safer sanitation practices and environmental protection.

Eko Hot News reports that the renewed push is part of efforts by the Lagos State Government to strengthen public health systems and curb the environmental risks associated with poor wastewater and faecal sludge management.

Speaking on the initiative, the General Manager of LSWMO, Adefemi Afolabi, described the campaign as a strategic intervention aimed at equipping public servants with the knowledge and responsibility required to adopt proper sanitation practices within government institutions and their communities.

He stressed that government officials must serve as frontline advocates of sustainable sanitation, noting that their leadership is critical to achieving a cleaner and more resilient Lagos. According to him, MDAs are expected to lead by example by ensuring compliance with established wastewater regulations while promoting environmental responsibility at all levels.

Afolabi warned that indiscriminate disposal of wastewater and faecal sludge poses serious threats, including groundwater contamination and the spread of communicable diseases. He reaffirmed LSWMO’s commitment to strengthening institutional collaboration, enforcing regulations, and driving behavioural change through continuous public enlightenment.

Also speaking, the Head of Operations, Safety and Maintenance, Yusuf Majolagbe, highlighted the environmental, social, and economic consequences of poor sanitation practices. She emphasised that awareness and education remain key drivers of sustainable behaviour, both at individual and institutional levels.

Majolagbe further stressed the need for strict adherence to operational standards and safety protocols in the handling, transportation, and disposal of faecal sludge to prevent hazards and ensure environmental sustainability.

He assured that the Ministry would integrate the knowledge gained into its operational processes and cascade it across staff.

The sensitisation session featured interactive discussions, Q&A segments, and practical demonstrations, with participants expressing increased awareness and commitment to improved sanitation practices.

Stakeholders say the Lagos Wastewater Management Campaign reflects the government’s broader commitment to building a culture of responsible wastewater management and ensuring a healthier environment across public institutions.
