The Lagos State Government has formalised a landmark sister-state partnership with the California State Assembly in the United States, marking a major step in international collaboration and economic diplomacy.

Eko Hot News reports that the partnership was established through Assembly Concurrent Resolution 129 (ACR 129), sponsored by Matt Haney, and unveiled at the California/Africa Climate and Economic Forum 2026. The event brought together government officials, business leaders, and members of the Nigerian diaspora to witness what is being described as one of the most significant Africa–California diplomatic engagements in recent years.

The resolution was received on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs, Jermaine Sanwo-Olu.

Speaking at the event, Jermaine emphasised that the agreement goes beyond symbolism, describing it as a structured framework designed to drive collaboration in key sectors such as climate resilience, transportation, infrastructure, innovation, and economic development. He noted that both Lagos and the U.S. state of California stand to benefit significantly from the partnership.

He further explained that the initiative aligns with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the Lagos State Government, aimed at strengthening the state’s global presence while unlocking new opportunities for sustainable growth and development.

Jermaine added that the partnership would position Lagos as a globally competitive city open to trade, innovation, and shared solutions to pressing global challenges. He also highlighted the strategic role of the Nigerian diaspora in fostering investment, facilitating knowledge exchange, and building long-term trust between both regions.

He expressed appreciation to Toks Omishakin, Secretary of Transportation for California, for his contributions in advancing the relationship.

In his remarks, Omishakin noted that the partnership would promote clean mobility, climate innovation, economic growth, and cultural exchange between two regions widely recognised for their creativity and ambition.

As both Lagos and California navigate challenges such as climate change, rapid urbanisation, and economic transformation, stakeholders say the agreement presents a viable model for cross-continental collaboration anchored on mutual benefit and measurable outcomes.
