Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced the acquisition of 24 new coaches for the Red Line Rail, aimed at improving the state’s multimodal transport system and easing commuter movement.
Eko Hot News reports that the Governor disclosed that the newly procured trains will operate as eight-car rolling stock, doubling the capacity of the current Blue Line trains, which run on four-car systems. This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance passenger capacity and service efficiency.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the Red Line corridor, stretching approximately 27 kilometres from Oyingbo to Agbado, is designed to accommodate up to 37 trips daily. When fully operational, the system is projected to move over 500,000 passengers each day.
This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance passenger capacity and service efficiency.

He noted that the rail expansion aligns with Lagos State’s broader transportation master plan, which integrates rail, road, and water systems to ensure seamless mobility across the state.
The Governor also revealed that discussions are ongoing to extend the Red Line beyond Lagos into neighbouring Ogun State. This move is expected to accommodate increasing commuter traffic and strengthen regional connectivity.
According to him, the expansion reflects the administration’s commitment to long-term infrastructure planning and sustainable urban development.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the state is not only investing in rail but also advancing water transportation through the Omi-Eko project. He stated that high-capacity electric boats are expected to be deployed by 2027 to complement existing ferry services.
He added that the integration of multiple transport modes is designed to improve travel efficiency, reduce congestion, and support economic growth across Lagos.
The Governor emphasised that improved transportation infrastructure will boost productivity and enhance revenue generation, positioning Lagos as a leading economic hub in Africa.

He further recalled that similar investments had earlier been made in the Blue Line Rail, noting that the state is replicating such efforts to strengthen the Red Line system.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated that the introduction of larger trains on the Red Line demonstrates the government’s proactive approach to meeting the growing mobility needs of residents.
He assured Lagosians that the administration remains focused on delivering modern and efficient transport solutions that improve daily commuting experiences.
The Governor expressed optimism that the ongoing projects would transform urban mobility and create new opportunities for residents and businesses alike.
He concluded by reaffirming his administration’s dedication to building a resilient and future-ready transport network that supports inclusive growth and development.
