The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has reiterated that all allottees in government-owned housing estates must obtain official approval before carrying out any external alterations, including the installation of solar panels.

Eko Hot News reports that the clarification was made by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, following concerns raised by a resident over approval requirements during a routine monitoring exercise at the Lagos State Millennium Housing Estate in Ibeshe.

According to Toriola, the directive is clearly stated in the Letter of Allocation and Allottees Guide issued to beneficiaries at the point of purchase of the housing units.

He explained that the policy is designed to protect shared infrastructure such as rooftops, walls, and water systems within the estates.

The Permanent Secretary noted that government estates are structured with interconnected facilities that serve multiple residents within the same building.

He added that unregulated alterations, especially solar panel installations, can pose risks to the overall safety and structural integrity of such shared spaces.

Toriola disclosed that the Ministry introduced specific guidelines after observing recurring issues linked to improper solar panel installations.

These challenges included damage to rooftops and technical faults that affected both users and other residents within the same building.

He further explained that the guidelines outline standards for installation, including material quality, panel configuration, and the expertise required for proper setup.

According to him, these measures are necessary to ensure safe installations and reduce potential hazards within residential blocks.

He emphasised that the guidelines also aim to prevent disputes among residents, particularly regarding the allocation of roof space for installations.

The Ministry has also considered the need to protect property value and ensure that all modifications align with approved building standards.

Toriola stated that compliance with these regulations helps to maintain order and promote harmonious living conditions in government housing estates.

He added that proper approval processes also enable the Ministry to monitor developments and provide necessary support where needed.

The Permanent Secretary encouraged residents to seek clarification from the Ministry whenever they intend to carry out modifications.

He assured that the Ministry remains open to feedback and continues to engage residents through regular public awareness initiatives.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety, sustainability, and efficient management of all state-owned housing facilities.

Residents were advised to adhere strictly to established procedures to avoid complications and ensure the long-term durability of shared infrastructure.
