Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) recently held a high-level engagement with Hakeem Muri-Okunola at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, focusing on leadership and public service.
Eko Hot News reports that the interactive fireside chat provided Fellows with a rare opportunity to learn directly from the Principal Private Secretary to the President of Nigeria and former Head of Service of Lagos State.
During the session, Muri-Okunola stressed that true leadership is defined by impact rather than visibility. He explained that meaningful leadership is rooted in substance and the ability to deliver results consistently.

Drawing from his experience working with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, both as Governor of Lagos State and now as President, he highlighted the importance of discipline and focus in public service.
He noted that leadership at the highest levels demands emotional intelligence and personal sacrifice. According to him, much of the real work happens behind the scenes, away from public attention.
Muri-Okunola encouraged the Fellows to prioritise competence and structure in their leadership journey. He also emphasised the need for continuous self-development to remain effective in evolving governance environments.

Earlier in the programme, the Executive Secretary of LJLA, Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, highlighted the value of such engagements in shaping future leaders.
She explained that direct interaction with experienced public servants helps Fellows gain practical insights into governance. This, she noted, strengthens the Academy’s mission to build a pipeline of capable leaders.
The session also featured the presence of Bode Agoro, who commended the Academy for its commitment to leadership development.

Agoro engaged the Fellows and encouraged them to remain focused on impactful service. He praised the initiative as a strong platform for grooming responsible and responsive leaders.
The event included an interactive question-and-answer segment. Fellows asked questions on governance, leadership pathways, and strategies for personal and professional growth.
The discussion allowed participants to gain clarity on real-world leadership challenges. It also provided guidance on navigating the complexities of public service.

In her vote of thanks, Cynthia Akhagbeme-Simeon expressed appreciation to the guest speaker for sharing valuable insights.
She reaffirmed the Academy’s commitment to developing value-driven leaders. According to her, LJLA will continue to provide platforms that prepare Fellows for national service.

The engagement reflects LJLA’s broader goal of nurturing a new generation of leaders equipped with the skills and mindset required for governance.
Observers note that such sessions help bridge the gap between theory and practice. They also inspire young leaders to pursue excellence in public service.
As the Academy continues its programmes, Fellows are expected to apply the lessons learned in their leadership journeys. The initiative remains a key contributor to building a stronger leadership culture in Nigeria.
