The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has commissioned a newly completed shopping mall designed to improve convenience and welfare for staff, patients, relatives, visitors and members of the hospital community.
Eko Hot News reports that the facility was commissioned as part of LASUTH’s efforts to provide additional support services within the hospital environment.
The Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, said the project was conceived after the hospital’s former mammy market was closed following a fire incident.
According to him, the hospital Management Committee subsequently decided to explore a partnership with a private entrepreneur to develop modern lock-up shops.
He explained that the arrangement was intended to provide convenient services to the hospital community while creating a mutually beneficial partnership.
Fabamwo disclosed that three firms participated in a competitive bidding process before BMC Global Limited, chaired by Asiwaju Igbalaye Mendes, emerged as the successful bidder.
He said the project was delivered with the support of the supervising ministry and approval of the Lagos State Government.
The Chief Medical Director added that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu approved the project, while LASUTH provided the land as its equity contribution.
The new mall consists of 22 lock-up shops equipped with individual electricity meters and toilet facilities.
The facility also has standby generators and 24-hour security to support the smooth operation of businesses and provide convenience for users.
Fabamwo explained that the services within the mall were deliberately categorised to minimise duplication and ensure that the different needs of the hospital community are adequately addressed.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of BMC Global Limited, Asiwaju Igbalaye Mendes, described the completion of the project as a significant milestone.
Mendes expressed appreciation to LASUTH management for its cooperation throughout the development process.
He disclosed that the project had a special personal significance to him, noting that its vision was inspired by his late son, Babatunde Oriyomi Mendes.
According to him, his late son strongly believed in the vision behind the project.
Mendes commended Prof. Fabamwo and the LASUTH management team for their professionalism, integrity and support during the construction process.
He acknowledged that the project encountered some challenges, particularly in coordinating activities around the construction site.
However, he said the challenges were addressed through cooperation among the relevant stakeholders.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, commended LASUTH management for initiating the project.
Abayomi described the shopping mall as an important development that would improve staff welfare and provide greater convenience for patients and visitors.
He also praised BMC Global Limited for delivering what he described as a quality structure.
The Commissioner stressed that healthcare institutions should pay attention to staff welfare alongside the provision of clinical services.
He said access to essential services within the hospital premises would make daily activities more convenient for workers and members of the hospital community.
Abayomi also highlighted LASUTH’s progress in advanced medical and surgical services.
He said the hospital’s growing capacity would contribute to reducing the need for residents to seek certain specialised medical services outside the country.
The Commissioner disclosed that the Lagos State Government is planning to establish a standalone University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
He also mentioned ongoing healthcare financing reforms aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare services.
According to him, the initiatives are expected to contribute to addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals and strengthening the state’s health system.
The commissioning ceremony brought together LASUTH management, government officials, representatives of BMC Global Limited and other stakeholders.
Professor Adebowale O. Adekoya, Director of Clinical Services and Training, delivered the vote of thanks at the event.
The commissioning plaque was subsequently unveiled as part of the activities marking the formal opening of the facility.
A symbolic presentation of keys was also made to a representative of the shop owners.
The event ended with a brief tour of the newly completed mall by guests and stakeholders.
The project represents another step in LASUTH’s efforts to develop facilities that complement its core healthcare responsibilities.
