LASRRA, OEQA Launch Student ID Drive

The Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) and the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) have partnered to provide every student in public and private schools across Lagos State with a unique identification number while registering them as official residents of the state.

Eko Hot News reports that the initiative was unveiled during a stakeholders’ engagement at the Office of Education Quality Assurance in Alausa, Ikeja. The meeting brought together education stakeholders, school association leaders, and officials from both agencies to discuss the implementation strategy.

Speaking at the event, LASRRA General Manager, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, said the collaboration aims to strengthen student identification and improve education data management across Lagos.

She explained that students in public schools are already required to possess a LASRRA number before admission. The new initiative, she said, will improve the process through better technology and closer collaboration with education districts.

According to Adebiyi-Abiola, the exercise will also ensure that student records are properly verified and consolidated into a reliable database for planning and service delivery.

She disclosed that private schools will receive special attention because many students may not yet have LASRRA numbers. Registration teams will therefore visit schools across different parts of the state to enrol eligible students.

The LASRRA boss assured stakeholders that the registration process has been designed to be simple and efficient, taking less than five minutes to complete for each student.

She added that once field operations begin, the exercise is expected to be completed within a few months through coordinated efforts with schools and education authorities.

Beyond assigning unique identification numbers, LASRRA will also issue standardised identification cards to both students and teachers in public and private schools.

According to her, discussions are ongoing with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to simplify access to National Identification Number (NIN) registration for students and members of school communities.

She explained that schools will conduct preliminary registration before LASRRA officials arrive for biometric capture and final verification, helping to reduce waiting time and improve efficiency.

Adebiyi-Abiola also announced plans to strengthen LASRRA’s presence through registration centres located across various local government areas to improve access to identity services.

Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, said extensive public awareness campaigns would precede the rollout of the exercise.

He noted that radio and television jingles, alongside other sensitisation activities, would be used to educate parents, schools, and students about the benefits of the programme.

Ogunmuyiwa described the partnership as a reflection of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to inter-agency collaboration and improved public service delivery.

According to him, assigning a unique identification number to every learner will enable the government to maintain accurate education records, monitor academic progress, and develop policies that improve learning outcomes.

He added that students will also benefit from being officially registered as Lagos residents, ensuring continued access to government services beyond their years in school.

The Director-General confirmed that the registration exercise will cover all public and private schools, with separate engagements already held to ensure smooth implementation across the education sector.

The Lagos State Government believes the initiative will strengthen identity management, improve educational planning, and support the delivery of efficient services while building a comprehensive database for future development initiatives.
