LASG Cracks Down on Dealer Number Plates

The Lagos State Government has warned motorists and vehicle dealers against the illegal use of dealer number plates for everyday driving and other activities outside the provisions of the law.

Eko Hot News reports that the warning comes as the state intensifies enforcement of regulations governing dealer number plates across Lagos.

The government said dealer number plates are issued for specific and limited purposes.

Under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, the plates are meant to support authorised vehicle-related activities.

These activities include test drives, vehicle inspections, delivery or collection of vehicles and the movement of unregistered vehicles from ports or approved dealer premises to designated locations.

The government stressed that dealer plates are not intended for permanent use on vehicles.

Motorists are also prohibited from using them for routine daily commuting or continuous movement on public roads.

The restriction also applies to vehicles that have already been sold but are still awaiting permanent registration.

According to the government, such use defeats the purpose of the dealer plate system and makes proper vehicle identification more difficult.

As part of its ongoing enforcement operations, the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has apprehended 175 vehicles for allegedly violating the regulations.

The government said the dealer plates recovered from the affected vehicles would be confiscated.

The vehicles involved will also undergo further investigation by the relevant authorities.

The enforcement exercise is part of efforts to improve compliance with vehicle registration requirements across the state.

The government said it would continue monitoring the use of dealer number plates on Lagos roads.

It also warned motorists against using registration numbers that are unauthorised, fake or deliberately obscured.

Vehicles found operating with improperly displayed or unauthorised registration numbers could face further enforcement measures.

These measures may include impoundment and prosecution in accordance with applicable traffic laws.

The state government urged vehicle dealers to ensure that their customers comply with registration requirements before using vehicles for regular transportation.

Dealers were also encouraged to educate prospective vehicle owners about the appropriate use of dealer plates.

The government said compliance would help strengthen accountability within the vehicle sales and registration process.

Proper registration also makes it easier for authorities to identify vehicles and verify ownership details when necessary.

The LASG noted that accurate vehicle identification remains important for effective traffic management across Lagos.

It also linked compliance with broader efforts to improve safety and order on the state’s roads.

The government therefore advised motorists to complete the appropriate registration process before using newly acquired vehicles for regular activities.

Dealer plates, it explained, should only be used within the circumstances permitted by law.

The warning is particularly important for vehicle dealers who may provide dealer plates to customers after the completion of vehicle sales.

The government stressed that the temporary nature of dealer plates must be respected.

A vehicle awaiting permanent registration does not automatically qualify for unrestricted use of a dealer number plate.

Instead, motorists are expected to follow the prescribed procedures for vehicle registration.

The enforcement action involving 175 vehicles demonstrates the government’s renewed focus on compliance.

The recovered plates will be reviewed as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding their use.

Vehicles found to have additional registration violations may also face appropriate sanctions.

The government said enforcement would be applied to any vehicle found operating outside the requirements of the law.

It therefore urged motorists to avoid practices that could lead to penalties or disruption of their vehicle operations.

Vehicle dealers were similarly advised to maintain proper records and ensure that dealer plates are used responsibly.

The government said the regulations are not designed to inconvenience legitimate vehicle businesses.

Rather, they are intended to ensure that dealer plates serve their proper purpose while supporting an organised vehicle registration system.

The system allows authorised dealers to conduct necessary vehicle movements without replacing the permanent registration process.

The government is also seeking to discourage the misuse of temporary identification numbers on public roads.

According to the LASG, stronger compliance will contribute to improved accountability among motorists and vehicle dealers.

It will also help authorities maintain more accurate records of vehicles operating within Lagos.

The state urged members of the public to familiarise themselves with the rules governing dealer number plates.

Motorists who have purchased vehicles were encouraged to complete the required registration procedures before regular use.

The government also reiterated that vehicles carrying fake, obscured or improperly used registration numbers would remain subject to enforcement.

The latest warning forms part of the state’s broader efforts to improve traffic management and regulatory compliance.

As enforcement continues, the LASG said motorists and dealers should ensure that their vehicles and documentation meet established requirements.

The government maintained that responsible use of dealer plates will support a more transparent and accountable transport system.

It urged all stakeholders to cooperate with enforcement officials and comply with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law.

For motorists and dealers, the message remains clear: dealer number plates are temporary and must only be used for authorised purposes.

The government said adherence to the rules will help promote accurate vehicle identification and contribute to safer and more orderly roads across Lagos.
