The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing the housing deficit through innovative strategies and strong public-private partnerships, delivering over 11,000 housing units in nearly seven years.

Eko Hot News reports that this was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, during a courtesy visit by Master’s students of the Centre for Planning Studies, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, to the Ministry.

The visit was organised to expose postgraduate students to practical housing administration, policy implementation, and service delivery, while strengthening collaboration between academic institutions and government agencies.

Represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr Akanji Shadare, Engr. Toriola commended the students and lecturers for the initiative and encouraged continuous engagement between the Ministry and the University.

He emphasised the importance of research-driven ideas, innovative solutions, and data sharing from academic institutions to support sustainable housing delivery in Lagos State.

Speaking on housing finance, the General Manager of the Lagos Building Investment Company (LBIC), represented by the Head of Mortgage and Credit Department, Mrs Olabisi Funsho-Peters, highlighted the role of mortgage institutions in the real estate value chain.

She explained that LBIC is an NDIC-insured mortgage bank providing housing loans with up to 70 per cent financing and repayment tenures of 10 years and above.

Also addressing the students, the Executive Director, Enterprise Services, Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), Mr Adeniyi Aromolaran, outlined the Corporation’s mandate in construction, sale, and rental of properties, clarifying that LSDPC does not operate social housing.

Earlier, the Programme Coordinator, Centre for Planning Studies, LASU, Professor Aliyu Ibrahim, said the visit was designed to provide firsthand insight into housing policy formulation, investment processes, and data management in Lagos State.

The Director of the Centre, Professor Fatai, noted that the engagement was aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world practice, describing it as vital to future urban planning and housing development.
