The Lagos State Bureau of the Public Defender has engaged market women in Aguda, Surulere, on their legal rights and access to justice.
Eko Hot News reports that the outreach took place at the Aguda Modern Market. The programme aimed to educate women on fundamental rights and available legal support services.
The initiative is part of efforts by the Lagos State Government to strengthen access to justice for vulnerable groups. It also focuses on empowering residents at the grassroots level.
Director of the Bureau, Olubunmi Adesomoju, said the programme was designed to celebrate and support women.
She explained that the government remains committed to ensuring justice for all residents. This includes free legal assistance for those in need.

Adesomoju noted that the Bureau has handled over 20,000 petitions in the last four years. This reflects its active role in legal support across Lagos State.
She added that women and children are among the most vulnerable groups. Many face issues such as domestic violence and discrimination.
She also highlighted challenges affecting widows. These include inheritance disputes, eviction risks, and economic hardship.
According to her, the Bureau’s mandate is to protect the indigent and vulnerable. Market women, she said, are a key focus of its outreach efforts.
She emphasised that all services provided by the Bureau are free. However, she noted that quality remains high due to trained legal professionals.
The Director explained that the Bureau also provides mediation services. These help resolve disputes without unnecessary delays.

She encouraged residents to take advantage of available support systems. Awareness, she said, is key to accessing justice.
The Iyaloja of Aguda Modern Market, Sidikatu Balogun, expressed appreciation for the initiative.
She said the sensitisation programme has empowered women with useful knowledge. This will help them better protect themselves and their families.
The Babaloja of the market, Sikiru Olanrewaju, also commended the Bureau.
He thanked the Lagos State Government for extending the outreach to the market community. He prayed for continued success of the agency.
The event featured interactive sessions and legal counselling. Participants received guidance on their rights and available remedies.
Topics discussed included domestic violence, child rights, and gender-based discrimination. These issues remain important concerns in many communities.

Officials explained how victims can seek help through official channels. They also encouraged reporting of rights violations.
The sensitisation programme reflects Lagos State’s commitment to justice and inclusion. It aims to ensure no resident is left without legal support.
Stakeholders believe such outreach programmes are effective. They help bridge the gap between legal institutions and the public.
The initiative is expected to strengthen trust in public legal services. It also promotes awareness at the community level.
As engagement continues, more communities are expected to benefit. The Bureau plans to expand similar programmes across the state.
The outreach reinforces the government’s focus on equity and justice. It highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable residents in Lagos.
