The Lagos State Government has held an interactive meeting with Coordinators of Voluntary Youth Organisations (VYOs) in public schools to strengthen youth development and ensure compliance with approved guidelines.
Eko Hot News reports that the interactive session was organised by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development at the Ikeja Youth Centre and brought together VYO coordinators from the six Education Districts across the state.
The Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, said the engagement was designed to assess enrolment levels, membership strength, performance standards, and operational challenges facing the organisations.
Ogunlende, who was represented by the Director of the Youth Department, Mr Abdulateef Saka, noted that the meeting would also help the Ministry understand the working relationships between the VYOs and other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

He urged coordinators to adopt creative strategies and innovative methods to attract more students, stressing the need to expand participation and deepen the impact of youth-focused programmes in public schools.
The Commissioner emphasised that the revitalised youth organisations must remain active, relevant, and aligned with the values of discipline, service, and leadership development.
Also speaking is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Pharm. (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu assured participants of the government’s continued support for the effective functioning of the organisations.

She was represented by the Director of the Voluntary Youth and Non-Governmental Organisation Relations Unit, Mr Julius Olukosi, who highlighted the historical role of youth organisations in shaping responsible leaders.
According to her, VYOs provide platforms for instilling values such as integrity, accountability, compassion, volunteerism, citizenship, and self-discipline among young people.

She added that these values are essential for grooming future leaders who will deliver people-oriented and ethical leadership.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining reforms that empower youths and strengthen character-building initiatives in public schools.
The Voluntary Youth Organisations relaunched in Lagos public schools in 2009, including the Boys Brigade, Sheriff Guards of Nigeria, Nigerian Red Cross, Scout Council, and Girl Guides.
