The Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has commenced a three-day residential retreat for its Board and Management staff, with a renewed call for excellence, innovation, and improved service delivery across the education sector.
Eko Hot News reports that the retreat, which began on Tuesday at the Novotel Hotel, Chevy View Drive, Lekki, is themed “Rebranding the Teaching Service Commission through Excellence and Strategic Innovation.”
Speaking at the opening session, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the retreat as a defining moment for TESCOM, stressing that teaching remains a noble profession central to shaping future generations.

He noted that rebranding the Commission requires deep introspection, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, adding that a strong brand identity would boost credibility, professionalism, and stakeholder trust.
The Commissioner charged participants to embrace unity, pride, and shared purpose, identifying key focus areas such as holistic teacher training, curriculum development, and effective stakeholder engagement.
He urged staff to learn from best practices, share experiences, and collaboratively develop a clear roadmap anchored on accountability, transparency, and measurable results.
In her keynote address, the Chairman of TESCOM, Mrs Mopelola Victoria Peregrino, emphasised that the Commission must evolve beyond routine administration into a centre of professional excellence and innovation in teacher management.
She stated that TESCOM’s reputation would ultimately be shaped by the quality of its decisions, the efficiency of its systems, and the integrity displayed by its workforce.

Mrs Peregrino called for innovative approaches, inclusive learning environments, and the strategic use of technology to support continuous professional development and institutional growth.
She stressed the need for people development, process optimisation, modernised workflows, and alignment of departmental goals with measurable outcomes to strengthen public trust.

The TESCOM Chairman urged participants to let the retreat mark a turning point toward strategic management, collaborative problem-solving, and sustainable educational transformation.
The opening ceremony was declared open by the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Establishment, Training, Pension and Public Service, Hon. Oladele Ajayi.

The retreat was attended by the six Tutor-General/Permanent Secretaries from the Education Districts and the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr Hakeem Shittu.
