The Lagos State Health District V (LHDV), in partnership with the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), has successfully concluded a two-day community health outreach across Badagry Division, providing free healthcare services and facilitating 2,500 enrolments into the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme.
Eko Hot News reports that the outreach formed part of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S.+ Agenda aimed at achieving Universal Health Coverage across Lagos State. The exercise received technical support from the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and DIDE and was conducted simultaneously across three strategic locations in Badagry Division.
The outreach was held on Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the open field beside Gbenopo Primary School, Agric Road, Sejeh in Ajara Topa, Badagry Local Government; Baale’s Compound, Ojogun, Olorunda LCDA; and Our Lady of Fatima Primary School, Gaingbo, Badagry West LCDA.
Residents received a wide range of free healthcare services, including Tuberculosis (TB) screening, eye examinations, dental screening, medical consultations, counselling, health education and other essential medical services. Thousands also took advantage of the opportunity to enrol in the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, giving them access to affordable and quality healthcare.
Speaking during the outreach, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, described the massive turnout across the three locations as a clear indication of increasing public confidence in government healthcare programmes.
He noted that the success of the exercise reflected the Lagos State Government’s unwavering commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare under the administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu.
Dr. Asiyanbi commended the collaboration between government agencies, healthcare workers, traditional rulers, community leaders and development partners, saying their collective efforts played a vital role in mobilising residents to participate in the outreach.
He stressed that every service provided during the exercise, including TB screening, health education, counselling and medical consultations, was completely free, urging residents to prioritise routine medical check-ups.
According to him, illnesses such as tuberculosis and hypertension often develop without obvious symptoms, making early diagnosis and regular health screenings essential for preventing serious complications and reducing treatment costs.
The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed Health District V’s commitment to sustaining community-based healthcare interventions that improve health outcomes and ensure that every Lagos resident has access to quality healthcare services.
Also addressing participants, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, encouraged residents to enrol in the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, describing it as one of the Lagos State Government’s flagship healthcare programmes.
She explained that enrollees enjoy comprehensive healthcare benefits, including access to free telemedicine consultations where patients can speak with qualified doctors in English, Yoruba or Pidgin from the comfort of their homes or workplaces. Beneficiaries can also receive professional medical advice and prescriptions redeemable at accredited pharmacies.
Dr. Zamba noted that the scheme significantly reduces out-of-pocket healthcare expenses while ensuring that residents receive quality medical care when needed.
She expressed satisfaction with the impressive turnout recorded during the outreach, describing it as evidence of growing public confidence in the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme.
According to her, the partnership between LASHMA and Lagos State Health District V demonstrates the Lagos State Government’s commitment to expanding healthcare access and achieving Universal Health Coverage.
At the Badagry Local Government venue, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Health District V and LASHMA for taking quality healthcare directly to the people.
He praised the Permanent Secretaries of both agencies for facilitating what he described as a timely intervention that received overwhelming community support.
Hon. Hunpe advised residents against self-medication, warning that symptoms such as persistent headaches could indicate underlying conditions like hypertension, which may become life-threatening if left untreated.
He urged residents to take advantage of the free medical services while embracing preventive healthcare as an effective way to maintain healthy living.
The Chairman also participated in the outreach and called on residents to continue supporting government initiatives designed to improve public health.
Similarly, the Executive Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, Hon. Rauf Ibrahim Yemaren, and the Executive Chairman of Olorunda LCDA, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, attended activities in their respective councils, where they commended the Lagos State Government for bringing healthcare services closer to the grassroots.
They encouraged residents to make full use of the free medical services and enrol in the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme to enjoy long-term healthcare benefits.
The successful outreach further reinforced the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery, promoting disease prevention, expanding health insurance coverage and ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for residents across the state.
