The Lagos Waste Management Authority has secured the conviction of 16 environmental offenders following their arraignment before the Oshodi Special Offences and Mobile Court for violating environmental sanitation laws in Lagos State.

Eko Hot News reports that the convictions followed the offenders’ arrest during coordinated enforcement operations carried out by LAWMA across Gbagada Expressway, Anthony Oke, Oworonsoki and Bariga. Officials said the individuals were apprehended for disposing of waste at unauthorised locations, including road medians and drainage channels.

The court sentenced each offender to four months’ imprisonment, comprising one month on each of four counts. The charges included improper waste disposal, failure to register with assigned Private Sector Participants (PSPs), violation of environmental sanitation regulations and other related offences.

The convictions form part of LAWMA’s ongoing enforcement campaign to improve compliance with environmental laws and encourage responsible waste management practices across Lagos State. The authority said the initiative is aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.

Commenting on the development, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the judgment as a clear demonstration of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations.

Dr. Gbadegesin said the convictions send a strong message that environmental laws will continue to be implemented consistently across the state. He noted that surveillance and enforcement activities would be strengthened to improve compliance with approved waste management practices.

LAWMA responsible waste disposal

According to him, LAWMA remains committed to expanding waste management infrastructure while enhancing service delivery to residents and businesses. He stressed that environmental sustainability requires active participation from every stakeholder.

The LAWMA boss reminded residents and commercial operators of their legal obligation to register with their assigned Private Sector Participant operators. He urged them to dispose of waste only through approved channels in line with existing environmental regulations.

Dr. Gbadegesin emphasised that effective waste management is a shared responsibility between government and the public. He explained that while government agencies continue to improve services, residents must also support efforts by complying with established sanitation guidelines.

He added that responsible waste disposal contributes to cleaner neighbourhoods, healthier communities and a more sustainable urban environment. He encouraged Lagos residents to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily activities.

LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying surveillance, monitoring and enforcement operations across the state. The authority said it would continue working with relevant security and environmental agencies to discourage environmental violations.

Officials also noted that regular enforcement exercises remain an important part of the state’s environmental sustainability agenda. They believe stronger compliance with sanitation laws will improve public hygiene and environmental quality.

Environmental experts have consistently encouraged residents to support government initiatives by adopting proper waste disposal habits and maintaining clean surroundings. They say public cooperation remains essential to achieving long-term environmental goals.

The authority urged residents to patronise only approved PSP operators for waste collection and to report environmental violations through appropriate government channels. It added that collective responsibility is key to maintaining a cleaner Lagos.

LAWMA reiterated that its enforcement drive will continue across all parts of Lagos State as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental compliance, strengthen sanitation standards and sustain a healthy environment for all residents.
