Babajide Sanwo-Olu and David Umahi have dismissed claims linking the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to recent flooding recorded in parts of Lagos State.
Eko Hot News reports that the governor and the Minister of Works made the clarification during a courtesy visit by Umahi and members of the National Assembly to the Lagos House, where they addressed public concerns surrounding the project.
Speaking during the meeting, Umahi disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed a comprehensive inspection of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway following widespread discussions on social media.
According to the minister, the directive was aimed at verifying claims that construction activities along the coastal corridor contributed to flooding in some parts of Lagos.
Umahi said engineers and relevant officials carried out the inspection to evaluate the concerns raised by members of the public.
He explained that the findings from the assessment did not establish any connection between the highway construction and the flooding experienced in affected communities.
The minister stated that the inspection confirmed that the project is progressing according to approved engineering standards and environmental guidelines.
He noted that the government remains committed to ensuring that major infrastructure projects are executed responsibly while protecting surrounding communities.
Umahi urged residents to rely on verified information regarding ongoing federal projects instead of unconfirmed reports circulating on social media.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also dismissed the allegations, saying the coastal highway project should not be blamed for the recent flooding incidents.
He explained that flooding in urban areas often results from multiple environmental and drainage-related factors that require long-term solutions.
The governor reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving drainage infrastructure and implementing measures that enhance flood management across the state.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remains a strategic national project designed to support economic growth and regional connectivity.
He described the project as one of the Federal Government’s most significant infrastructure investments aimed at improving transportation along Nigeria’s coastline.
According to the governor, the highway will strengthen commercial activities, facilitate easier movement of goods and services, and create new economic opportunities.
He also noted that Lagos continues to work closely with the Federal Government to ensure that infrastructure development supports sustainable urban growth.
Sanwo-Olu encouraged residents to obtain information from credible government sources whenever questions arise about public projects.
He emphasised that transparency and regular stakeholder engagement remain important parts of project implementation.
The governor added that infrastructure projects of this scale undergo detailed planning, technical evaluations and continuous monitoring throughout construction.
Observers say the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is expected to improve connectivity between several coastal states while supporting tourism, commerce and investment.
The project is also anticipated to reduce travel time, improve logistics and strengthen regional economic integration across southern Nigeria.
Government officials reiterated that infrastructure development remains a priority for both the federal and Lagos State governments.
They assured residents that all necessary environmental and engineering assessments would continue throughout the construction process.
The meeting concluded with renewed confidence in the project’s long-term benefits and a call for the public to support ongoing infrastructure initiatives through constructive engagement and factual information.
