LSACA Urges Religious Leaders To Champion HIV Awareness, Fight Stigma

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), has called on religious leaders across the state to actively support HIV prevention efforts and work against stigma within their communities.

Eko Hot News reports that the appeal was made during a sensitisation workshop on HIV and AIDS prevention and stigma reduction held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja.

Speaking at the event, LSACA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, highlighted the strong influence of faith leaders in shaping public behaviour and promoting health awareness.

She noted that religious leaders remain key stakeholders in encouraging testing, supporting treatment adherence, and correcting misinformation about HIV.

According to her, despite medical advances, stigma and discrimination continue to discourage many people from accessing care and knowing their health status.

Dr. Animashaun explained that HIV is now a manageable condition, stressing that early testing and consistent treatment enable people to live healthy and productive lives.

She commended Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for sustained investment in public health programmes aimed at improving residents’ wellbeing.

She added that the workshop reflects government commitment to building a healthier and more informed society.

The LSACA boss urged religious institutions to use their platforms to spread accurate health information and promote compassion toward people living with HIV.

She stressed that health education does not conflict with faith but helps protect families and strengthen communities.

Dr. Animashaun also encouraged leaders to challenge harmful beliefs and discourage practices that may increase stigma or misinformation.

Representing the National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmad Saheed cautioned religious leaders against offering unverified medical advice or alternative remedies.

He emphasized the importance of referring individuals to qualified health professionals for proper care and treatment.

He also urged continuous learning among faith leaders to ensure they provide accurate and responsible guidance to their followers.

According to him, informed leadership plays a vital role in supporting affected individuals with dignity and compassion.

In his remarks, the Presiding Chaplain of Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Rev. (Dr.) Ajayi, described the workshop as timely and impactful.

He added that such engagements help faith leaders better educate their congregations and promote healthier communities.

The workshop is part of LSACA’s ongoing strategy to strengthen community involvement in HIV prevention and stigma reduction across Lagos State.

It also aims to deepen collaboration between government and faith-based institutions in promoting inclusive health education.

Authorities say sustained engagement with religious leaders will help improve awareness, encourage testing, and reduce discrimination against people living with HIV.
