The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has reaffirmed the importance of safe food as a fundamental consumer right and a shared responsibility among all stakeholders in the food supply chain.
Eko Hot News reports that the message was delivered by the General Manager of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo Esq., in commemoration of World Food Safety Day 2026.
This year’s theme, “From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere,” highlights the need for practical and science-based approaches to reducing foodborne illnesses.
Solebo stressed that food safety remains critical to protecting public health and ensuring consumer confidence in food systems.
He noted that preventing contamination at every stage of food production and distribution is essential for safeguarding lives.
According to him, food safety is not only a regulatory issue but also a collective duty shared by producers, processors, vendors, and consumers.
He urged all stakeholders in the food sector to strictly adhere to established hygiene and safety standards.
Solebo emphasized the importance of proper food handling practices, especially in markets, restaurants, and processing facilities.
He also encouraged consumers to remain vigilant and make informed decisions when purchasing and consuming food products.
The agency warned that negligence in food safety practices can contribute to the spread of foodborne diseases.
LASCOPA called for continuous education and awareness campaigns to strengthen public understanding of food safety risks.
Solebo explained that science-based interventions remain key to preventing contamination and ensuring healthier communities.
He added that compliance with safety regulations helps reduce the burden on the healthcare system.
The agency reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to enforce consumer protection standards.
It also encouraged stronger collaboration between government agencies and private sector operators in the food industry.
LASCOPA said sustained efforts are needed to ensure that safe food is accessible to all households across Lagos State.
The agency reaffirmed that protecting consumers remains a top priority in its regulatory mandate.
Stakeholders were reminded that food safety begins from the point of production and continues through to consumption.
Solebo concluded that achieving “safe food everywhere” requires shared responsibility, discipline, and consistent adherence to best practices.
