The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to adopt waste reduction, sorting, and responsible disposal practices as disposal facilities across the state face operational pressure caused by heavy rainfall and difficult terrain conditions.
Eko Hot News reports that the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed that persistent rainfall and increased waste evacuation activities have placed significant strain on waste disposal infrastructure in Lagos State.
He explained that the situation has affected truck movement, turnaround time, and operational efficiency at several landfill and disposal sites across the state.
According to him, the weather-related challenges have also disrupted evacuation logistics for Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and sanitation workers.
Dr. Gbadegesin noted that sanitation personnel continue to work under difficult weather conditions to sustain waste management operations throughout Lagos.
He stated that LAWMA is actively engaging stakeholders and implementing measures aimed at improving accessibility and stabilising disposal operations during the rainy season.
The agency, he said, is also working to reduce pressure on critical waste infrastructure while ensuring uninterrupted sanitation services.
Dr. Gbadegesin called on residents to support ongoing interventions by reducing the volume of waste generated in homes and businesses.
He further advised residents to properly bag their waste before disposal to improve collection efficiency and reduce environmental pollution.
The LAWMA boss emphasized the importance of waste sorting at source, particularly the separation of recyclable and organic waste materials.
He explained that sorting waste would significantly reduce the burden on disposal facilities while promoting recycling and resource recovery initiatives.
According to him, the practice aligns with Lagos State’s broader transition toward a circular economy and a more sustainable waste management system.
Dr. Gbadegesin assured residents that LAWMA remains committed to maintaining environmental sanitation across the state despite operational challenges.
He highlighted the agency’s continued collaboration with PSP operators, sanitation workers, and other stakeholders to strengthen waste management operations.
The agency is also pursuing operational reforms and infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving the resilience of the waste management system.
Dr. Gbadegesin commended PSP operators, drivers, and sanitation personnel for their dedication and resilience in maintaining service delivery during the rainy season.
He acknowledged the efforts of frontline waste management workers who continue to operate despite prevailing environmental and logistical constraints.
LAWMA appealed to residents for patience, understanding, and cooperation as efforts continue to improve waste evacuation operations statewide.
The authority reiterated that cleaner communities can only be achieved through collective responsibility and public participation in proper waste disposal practices.
Eko Hot News notes that the ongoing rainfall season has increased environmental challenges across Lagos, making effective waste management more critical to public health and sanitation.
The agency encouraged residents to embrace sustainable waste practices to support government efforts toward a cleaner and healthier Lagos environment.
