The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has intensified its statewide sensitisation campaign to promote sustainable wastewater and faecal sludge management practices across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The General Manager of LSWMO, Adefemi Afolabi, described the campaign as a strategic intervention aimed at equipping public servants with the knowledge needed for safe sanitation practices.
Afolabi noted that government officials play a vital role in promoting proper wastewater management. He said their leadership is essential in achieving a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
He urged MDAs to lead by example by complying with wastewater regulations and standards. According to him, building a culture of environmental responsibility must begin within government institutions.
The General Manager warned that improper disposal of wastewater and faecal sludge poses serious risks. He highlighted concerns such as groundwater contamination and the spread of communicable diseases.
He reaffirmed LSWMO’s commitment to strengthening collaboration among stakeholders. He added that the agency will continue to drive behavioural change through education and enforcement.

During a sensitisation session held at the Lagos State Ministry of Finance, officials provided practical insights into safe wastewater handling.
The Head of Wastewater Management Education, Moriliat Abioro, shared guidance on best practices. She emphasised the importance of routine desludging and engaging licensed operators for sewage evacuation.
Abioro noted that proper maintenance of sanitation systems is essential for preventing environmental hazards. She encouraged participants to adopt responsible practices in their workplaces and homes.
Also speaking, the Head of Operations, Safety and Maintenance, Yusuf Majolagbe, highlighted the broader impact of poor sanitation on society.
Majolagbe explained that inadequate wastewater management can affect environmental quality and economic stability. She stressed that awareness is key to encouraging positive behavioural change.
She further outlined the need for strict adherence to operational standards and safety protocols. According to her, proper handling and disposal of faecal sludge are critical for sustainability.

Participants were educated on approved procedures for wastewater transportation and disposal. The session focused on reducing risks and ensuring compliance with regulations.
