The Lagos Government has revealed the reason the Oko Oba Abattoir was shut down.
Eko Hot News reports that the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has attributed the indefinite closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege to unsafe and unhygienic practices by traders in the market.
Recall the market was shut on Thursday, June 19, 2025, following a visit by the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, details of which he shared on his X page.
In a video accompanying the post, the commissioner disclosed that the market was shut because the government had observed that some people were sleeping in the market alongside animals.
The Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, while addressing the traders, also disclosed that he was acting on the directives of the state government.
“It’s not going to work, the government sent me here, and I’ve done the message. I am closing it down until things are done the right way.
“People cannot be sleeping in an animal field; it’s not going to work, and let’s try to do something right. When we shut it down, somebody will sit down and think,” he explained in the video.
Meanwhile, Eko Hot News reports that Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege was one among many such markets that had been shut for various environmental infractions in the state.
