The U.S. Treasury Secretary has suggested that President Donald Trump should be featured on commemorative currency marking America’s 250th independence anniversary in 2026.
Eko Hot News reports that Scott Bessent made the remarks during a discussion at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, noting that legislative proposals are already in motion to place Trump’s image on a proposed $250 bill.
Bessent said the plan aligns with historical tradition, referencing past commemorative coins issued during milestone national anniversaries.
He compared the proposal to earlier currency designs tied to former presidents during significant U.S. celebrations.
According to him, discussions are ongoing about including Trump’s likeness on special edition currency and commemorative coins.
The Treasury Secretary argued that sitting presidents during major anniversaries often play a symbolic role in national commemorations.
He stated that President Trump’s leadership during the semiquincentennial period makes him a fitting figure for such recognition.
Bessent also referenced proposed legislation in the U.S. Congress seeking to introduce a $250 bill featuring Trump’s portrait.
The proposal, however, has not yet advanced through the legislative process.
He noted that existing U.S. currency laws generally prohibit living individuals from appearing on official money.
Despite this, he said the Treasury Department retains some discretion over design elements of commemorative issues.
He explained that currency design rules require adherence to specific inscriptions and historical standards.
The proposed plan would require congressional approval before any changes could be implemented.
Lawmakers earlier introduced a bill seeking authorization for the special denomination.
The initiative forms part of broader preparations for the United States’ 250th independence anniversary scheduled for July 4, 2026.
Officials say the celebrations will include national events, historical tributes, and commemorative programs across the country.
The discussion has sparked public debate over tradition, symbolism, and political representation on U.S. currency.
Supporters argue it reflects historical continuity, while critics question the appropriateness of featuring living leaders.
The Donald Trump remains central to the ongoing conversation surrounding the proposal.
Legislative deliberations are expected to continue in the coming months as the anniversary approaches.
