Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to climate resilience while representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the official launch of the Climate Defense and Catalytic Fund (CDCF).
Eko Hot News reports that Dr. Hamzat attended the Climate Finance Leadership and Recognition Night, where he formally launched the Climate Defense and Catalytic Fund, a financing initiative designed to strengthen climate resilience and accelerate sustainable development projects across Lagos.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor said the establishment of the CDCF demonstrates Lagos State’s determination to adopt practical financial solutions for addressing climate-related challenges.
According to him, the fund has been created to mobilise resources and attract private sector investment into projects that improve environmental sustainability and protect vulnerable communities.
Dr. Hamzat explained that climate resilience requires more than policy discussions. He noted that adequate financing remains essential to delivering projects that can withstand the growing effects of climate change.
He emphasized that the Climate Defense and Catalytic Fund will help bridge funding gaps by encouraging collaboration between government, development partners and private investors.
The Deputy Governor said the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to building infrastructure capable of adapting to changing environmental conditions while promoting long-term economic growth.
He added that climate financing has become increasingly important as cities around the world seek innovative ways to strengthen resilience against environmental challenges.
According to Dr. Hamzat, investments made through the CDCF will support projects that protect communities, improve public infrastructure and encourage sustainable urban development.
He noted that Lagos continues to experience rapid population growth, making it necessary to invest in infrastructure that is both durable and environmentally sustainable.
The Deputy Governor stressed that mobilising private capital will play a critical role in delivering large-scale climate adaptation projects capable of benefiting millions of residents.
He stated that government alone cannot provide all the resources required for climate resilience. Strategic partnerships with financial institutions and private investors, he said, remain vital to achieving lasting results.
Dr. Hamzat also highlighted the importance of innovation in addressing climate issues. He encouraged stakeholders to embrace new financing models capable of supporting sustainable development initiatives.
The Climate Finance Leadership and Recognition Night brought together government officials, development organisations, financial institutions, environmental experts and private sector representatives committed to advancing climate action.
Participants discussed opportunities for expanding climate finance, encouraging responsible investment and strengthening collaboration to support environmental sustainability.
Observers at the event described the CDCF as an important step toward increasing investment in climate adaptation projects across Lagos State.
They noted that dedicated funding mechanisms can accelerate projects involving flood management, resilient infrastructure, renewable energy, sustainable transportation and environmental conservation.
Lagos State has continued implementing policies aimed at improving environmental sustainability through investments in cleaner energy, waste management, resilient infrastructure and urban planning.
The state government has repeatedly emphasized that partnerships remain central to achieving its long-term environmental objectives and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
By launching the Climate Defense and Catalytic Fund, Lagos seeks to create a platform that attracts greater investment into projects capable of protecting communities while supporting economic growth.
