Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday attended the 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival at Tafawa Balewa Square, praising the event as a lively celebration of Lagos’s rich cultural heritage.
Eko Hot News reports that the carnival brought together historic Lagos Island communities, including Campos, Lafiaji, Okoo-Faji, Okepopo, Olowogbowo, Epetedo, and Isale-Eko, in a spectacular display of music, dance, and colourful costumes.

Participants showcased their unique identities through parades, choreography, and energetic street performances, creating a festive atmosphere that attracted large crowds.
Rooted in Afro-Brazilian (Aguda) heritage and indigenous Lagos traditions, the Fanti Carnival has become a major annual festival blending history, fashion, cuisine, and community pride.
This year’s edition, themed “homecoming of heritage,” featured elaborate street parades, cultural displays, and performances by youth groups, highlighting the importance of preserving local traditions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the significance of cultural preservation, saying, “Today reflects an important part of our heritage that we must continue to preserve and celebrate. We remain committed to supporting cultural platforms that strengthen identity and bring our people together.”
The event aligns with the Lagos State Government’s ongoing initiatives to promote tourism, revive cultural practices, and foster community cohesion.

Organisers reported high attendance and strong interest ahead of the carnival, underscoring Lagos’s reputation as a hub for cultural excellence in Nigeria and beyond.
