Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has hosted outstanding student-athletes who delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 World School Games in Doha, Qatar, reaffirming the state’s support for youth sports development.
Eko Hot News reports that the reception honoured athletes from six Lagos schools who excelled across athletics, football, and swimming at the global event held from January 29 to 31, 2026, in Doha. The students competed in U-11, U-13, and U-15 categories, securing multiple medals and top placements.
Participating schools included St. Saviour’s School, Grange School, Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory & Secondary School, and Corona School.

Notably, St. Saviour’s and Grange School recorded standout victories, contributing significantly to Lagos’ medal haul at the competition.
Speaking during the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to integrating sports into the academic curriculum.
He emphasized that structured collaboration between schools and the Lagos State Sports Commission would enhance talent development without disrupting education.
The governor also proposed the introduction of more inter-school competitions within Lagos, aimed at nurturing talent locally before exposure to international platforms.

According to him, such initiatives will create a steady pipeline of young athletes capable of competing globally.
Encouraging the students, Sanwo-Olu urged them to remain disciplined and focused, noting that their current achievements mark only the beginning of greater opportunities ahead.
He stressed the importance of balancing sports excellence with academic success to become well-rounded individuals.
He further highlighted that Lagos is positioning itself as a hub for sporting excellence, adding that more schools are expected to join future competitions.

The governor assured continued support through funding and strategic planning to sustain the momentum.
Earlier, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, commended the athletes for their resilience and dedication.

He noted that their achievements reflect the growing impact of grassroots sports development initiatives across the state.
The event concluded with the presentation of plaques to the victorious athletes, celebrating their accomplishments and inspiring other students across Lagos to pursue excellence in both sports and academics.
