The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has organised a workshop for parents and caregivers of children with special needs to strengthen inclusive education and family support systems in the state.

Eko Hot News reports that the workshop was held at the Education Resource Centre, Ojodu, Lagos, and focused on equipping participants with practical strategies to support the development and well-being of children with special needs, while also providing insights into government initiatives on inclusive education.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, acknowledged the challenges faced by parents and caregivers, stressing that parental care plays a critical role in the growth and development of children with special needs.

He explained that the theme, “Rekindling the Hope of Parents of Special Needs Children,” reflects the government’s resolve to empower parents with relevant knowledge, practical tools, and access to support networks that can enhance their children’s learning outcomes.

The Commissioner emphasised that disability should not be seen as a stigma or limitation, adding that social progress depends on the full participation of persons with disabilities as equal members of society. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a barrier-free learning environment for every child.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, commended parents and caregivers for their dedication, assuring them that their efforts make meaningful impacts in the lives of their children.

She noted that the workshop also serves as a platform for emotional support, peer connection, and improved mental well-being, reminding participants that they are not alone in their journey.

The Director of Child Guidance, School Counselling and Special Education, Mrs Oluwatoyin Williams, urged parents to confidently present their children to society, stressing that every child possesses unique abilities deserving of equal opportunities.

The workshop featured a keynote lecture by Professor Samuel Adeniyi of the University of Lagos, alongside a panel session where experts and individuals shared practical insights on supporting children with special needs.
