The Lagos State Weightlifting Association has donated training equipment to athletes to strengthen their preparation for upcoming local and international competitions.

Eko Hot News reports that the presentation took place at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, Lagos, as part of efforts to improve performance and deepen the development of weightlifting in the state.

Speaking during the presentation, the Director of Technical, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Ife Ogunlaja, said the equipment would significantly enhance athletes’ training experience and competitive readiness.

Ogunlaja explained that the donated items would complement existing facilities, enabling weightlifters to train more effectively and focus fully on skill development and performance improvement.

According to him, access to modern and adequate equipment remains critical to preparing athletes for national and international championships, where technical precision and consistency are key.

The Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Weightlifting Association, Mr Aderemi Lasisi, described the donation as a strategic intervention to promote the growth of weightlifting across Lagos State.

Lasisi noted that weightlifting often receives less attention compared to popular sports such as football and basketball, stressing the need for deliberate support to grow it into a globally competitive sport.

“There is a need to assist government efforts in developing weightlifting as a key international sport. Proper equipment is essential for training athletes to meet global standards,” he said.

He disclosed that while the equipment distribution will begin in Lagos, the initiative will later be extended to other states in the South-West region.
