The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Oba of Badagry and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

Eko Hot News reports that the revered monarch joined his ancestors at the age of 89, leaving behind decades of service to the people of Badagry Kingdom and Lagos State.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the death of Oba Akran as a significant loss to Badagry, Lagos, and Nigeria, citing his influence as a respected traditional ruler and cultural leader.

The Governor, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, noted that the late monarch reigned for nearly 49 years.

He said Oba Akran was widely known for his wisdom, commitment to cultural preservation, and relentless advocacy for the socio-economic development of Badagry.

According to the Governor, the monarch rendered selfless service to his people and left a lasting legacy of unity, tradition, and progressive leadership.

Sanwo-Olu commiserated with the people of Badagry Kingdom and the family of the late Oba, describing his passing as a major loss to the traditional institution in Lagos State.

He praised Oba Akran as a stabilising force who united diverse interests within Badagry and upheld its customs and heritage.

The Governor added that the late monarch promoted Badagry’s historical sites and cultural festivals locally and internationally, boosting tourism and cultural exchange.

He also acknowledged Oba Akran’s role in attracting development to the ancient town.

Sanwo-Olu urged the family, traditional institutions, and the people of Badagry to work towards immortalising the late monarch’s legacy.

He prayed for the repose of Oba Akran’s soul and for comfort for all those affected by the loss.
