Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr Oreoluwa Finnih, traced the institutional growth of the SDGs Office from its origin as the Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment in 2015 to its re-establishment as the Lagos State Office of SDGs in 2023 under the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

She stated that the transformation has strengthened Lagos’ capacity to integrate sustainability into planning and service delivery, positioning the state as a model for subnational SDG implementation across Africa.

Dr Finnih outlined major achievements, including the Voluntary Local Review, which demonstrated Lagos’ data-driven commitment to transparency and inclusive reporting of SDG progress.

She highlighted the financial inclusion initiative for women in coastal and hard-to-reach communities, which has empowered thousands across Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, Alimosho, Badagry, Agege, Mushin and other LGAs through digital literacy, business support and livelihood tools.

Other notable achievements include the SDG Champions Programme, the SDG Volunteer Corps, the Lagos Sustainability Summit, and the creation of the Lagos Carbon Registry, designed to strengthen climate action and green financing.

Permanent Secretary, Office of SDGs, Mrs Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, thanked partners and stakeholders, describing the anniversary as a moment of reflection and a renewed call to expand collaborative and community-focused SDG interventions.

She commended award recipients for their contributions to grassroots sustainability efforts and acknowledged the dedication of the Special Adviser, technical partners, volunteers and media teams in delivering a successful celebration.
