The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB) has charged nurses across the state’s primary healthcare system to remain committed to professional growth, ethical leadership and excellence in service delivery as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services in Lagos.
Eko Hot News reports that the charge was given during the opening of the 2026 Nurse Leaders Retreat, an annual leadership and capacity-building programme organised by the Board to enhance the skills, wellness and effectiveness of nurse managers across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, commended nurses for their dedication, resilience and outstanding contributions to improving healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
He acknowledged the vital role nurse leaders play in strengthening primary healthcare services despite the demanding nature of their responsibilities and encouraged them to remain focused on continuous learning and professional development.
According to Dr. Mustafa, leadership is a lifelong journey that requires constant growth, innovation and commitment to service.
He urged participants to invest in their personal well-being, embrace new knowledge, adopt innovative approaches to healthcare delivery and take advantage of opportunities for career advancement.
The Permanent Secretary also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare workforce through continuous capacity-building programmes, supportive policies and initiatives aimed at improving service delivery across primary healthcare facilities.
He further encouraged nurse leaders to serve as worthy ambassadors of the nursing profession by mentoring younger colleagues, maintaining the highest ethical standards and demonstrating exemplary leadership in their respective health facilities and districts.
Dr. Mustafa also applauded the Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Nurse Anne Olasumbo Oyesanya, for sustaining the annual Nurse Leaders Retreat.
He described the programme as a strategic platform that promotes leadership development, collaboration and staff well-being while strengthening the capacity of nurse managers across Lagos State.
In her welcome address, the Director of Nursing Services, Nurse Anne Olasumbo Oyesanya, said the retreat has grown into an important forum for learning, mentorship, collaboration and professional renewal among nurse leaders.
She explained that following the successful maiden edition in 2024 and the consolidation of leadership development efforts in 2025, the 2026 retreat places greater emphasis on the wellness of healthcare leaders.
According to her, effective leadership can only thrive when leaders are physically healthy, emotionally balanced and mentally resilient.
She noted that the retreat’s theme, “Restored to Lead: Strengthening Bonds, Renewing Energy,” reflects the Board’s commitment to equipping nurse leaders not only with professional knowledge but also with the emotional and physical strength required to provide quality leadership across the primary healthcare system.
Mrs. Oyesanya explained that the three-day retreat features leadership development sessions, wellness discussions, interactive panel engagements, team-building exercises, recreational activities, outdoor games and networking opportunities.
She added that the activities were carefully designed to strengthen relationships among nurse leaders, promote collaboration, improve workplace morale and restore participants’ passion for service.
The annual Nurse Leaders Retreat remains one of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board’s flagship capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing leadership, promoting staff welfare and ensuring that residents continue to receive quality, accessible and efficient primary healthcare services across the state.
