Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated the Government and people of Canada on the country’s 159th Confederation Anniversary, reaffirming Lagos State’s commitment to strengthening investment, business growth, and economic cooperation between Canada and Nigeria.
Eko Hot News reports that Governor Sanwo-Olu made the remarks during the Canada Day Reception and the 6th Canada-Africa Business Conference held in Lagos. He described the state as the ideal venue for celebrating Canada Day and discussing the future of Canada-Africa economic relations.
The governor said Lagos and Canada share important values, including openness, enterprise, diversity, and constructive global engagement. He noted that these shared principles continue to create opportunities for stronger partnerships and sustainable development.
Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation to the Canada-Africa Chamber of Business for selecting Lagos as the host city for its flagship conference for the first time. He described the decision as recognition of Lagos’ position as Africa’s commercial capital and a leading destination for investment and innovation.
According to the governor, Nigeria remains Canada’s second-largest trading partner in Africa, with bilateral merchandise trade exceeding $3 billion in 2025. He noted that a significant share of this trade passes through Lagos, reinforcing the state’s role as Nigeria’s commercial gateway.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that Lagos is strategically positioned to support Canada’s Africa Strategy, which focuses on shared prosperity, sustainable growth, and mutual development.
He said the Lagos State Government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for investors through the implementation of the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Development Agenda. According to him, the agenda prioritises infrastructure renewal, economic expansion, improved public services, and ease of doing business.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Canadian businesses and investors. He assured potential investors that Lagos offers a transparent, productive, and rewarding environment for long-term investments.
The governor highlighted major infrastructure achievements, including the commencement of passenger services on the Blue and Red Rail Lines. He also identified the Lekki Deep Sea Port as a key logistics and trade gateway that continues to strengthen Lagos’ economic competitiveness.
Looking ahead, Sanwo-Olu pointed to future investment opportunities through the proposed Green Line Rail Project, expansion of the state’s digital and innovation ecosystem, industrial growth across strategic corridors, and reforms in the electricity sector designed to improve productivity and sustainability.
He noted that these projects go beyond government initiatives, describing them as investment opportunities for partners interested in contributing to Lagos’ long-term economic growth and development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended Canada’s commitment of more than $30 million to strengthen health systems, support women entrepreneurs, and improve climate resilience across Nigeria and West Africa. He described the support as a strong example of meaningful international partnership.
He further stated that the relationship between Nigeria and Canada extends beyond trade and investment. According to him, thousands of students, professionals, entrepreneurs, and families continue to strengthen cultural and economic ties between both countries.
The governor reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to building stronger partnerships with Canada while creating more opportunities for investment, innovation, and inclusive economic growth that will benefit businesses and citizens alike.
