The Lagos State Government has officially joined the Under2 Coalition, a global network of subnational governments committed to achieving net-zero emissions and strengthening climate resilience across economies.
Eko Hot News reports that the development was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Climate Group in London during the London Climate Action Week 2026.
The Under2 Coalition brings together more than 180 states and regions representing a significant share of the global economy, working collectively to accelerate climate solutions, share best practices, and support sustainable development goals.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said Lagos’ membership reflects its commitment to building a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy while maintaining strong economic growth. He noted that cities and regions now play a leading role in global climate action.
He added that Lagos, as Africa’s commercial hub, is focused on ensuring that environmental responsibility and economic development progress together for long-term benefits to residents and future generations.
The Governor also highlighted ongoing initiatives such as Lagos State-Determined Contributions (SDCs) and climate investment projects aimed at attracting sustainable financing and driving green development.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, said the partnership will strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange with global partners while advancing Lagos’ climate implementation agenda.
She noted that Lagos is transitioning from policy commitments to practical action through structured climate programmes and innovative environmental strategies.
Representatives of the Under2 Coalition welcomed Lagos into the network, describing the state as a leading force in Africa’s subnational climate space with a strong track record of environmental initiatives.
They stated that Lagos’ inclusion will enhance global cooperation and further strengthen efforts toward a net-zero and climate-resilient future.
The signing ceremony, held alongside London Climate Action Week 2026, brought together global leaders, policymakers, and sustainability investors focused on clean energy and environmental innovation.
