The Lagos State Government has constituted an ad-hoc committee to oversee the coordination of the 2026 Hajj exercise in the Saudi Arabia, as preparations intensify for the annual pilgrimage.
Eko Hot News reports that the committee, chaired by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Islamic Matters, Ahmad Abdullahi Jebe, was inaugurated by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Olanrewaju Ibrahim Layode, at the Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja.
Speaking during the inauguration, Hon. Layode stated that the selection of committee members was based on their competence, dedication, and proven capacity to deliver. He noted that the committee is expected to ensure smooth planning and execution of all activities related to the pilgrimage.
He charged members to carry out their responsibilities with diligence, integrity, and commitment, in line with the mandate of the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board. According to him, their role is critical to achieving a seamless Hajj exercise for all intending pilgrims from Lagos State.

The Commissioner outlined the committee’s terms of reference, which include coordinating logistics, ensuring pilgrims’ welfare, overseeing accommodation, and facilitating medical arrangements. He added that the committee would also handle other assignments as may be required during the exercise.
Hon. Layode emphasised that the appointment of the committee takes immediate effect and will remain valid throughout the duration of the 2026 Hajj operations. He congratulated members and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Dr. Jebe expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and the Commissioner for the opportunity to serve. He assured that the committee would carry out its duties responsibly and efficiently.
Dr. Jebe also appealed for continued support from the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure smooth coordination of activities. He pledged the committee’s commitment to delivering a successful Hajj exercise for Lagos pilgrims.
He subsequently announced the composition of sub-committees to enhance operational efficiency. These include Accommodation, Welfare, Manifest/Visa/Media, Madinah/Muna and Arafat, Dawah/Enlightenment, Transport, and Luggage and Weighing units, each led by designated coordinators.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner disclosed that the airlifting of about 1,600 intending pilgrims from Lagos State will commence on May 7, 2026. He noted that the first batch will consist of 345 pilgrims, marking the start of the exercise.
He further outlined the airlift schedule, stating that subsequent flights will follow on May 8, May 10, May 12, and the final batch on May 13. The arrangement aligns with the schedule released by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.
Hon. Layode also revealed that Flynas, the airline designated for the operation, has approved an increase in luggage allowance for pilgrims. He explained that each pilgrim will now be entitled to 46kg of main luggage, divided into two 23kg bags.

He added that the hand luggage allowance remains at 8kg, ensuring that pilgrims have adequate capacity for their personal belongings. The adjustment is expected to improve convenience and comfort during the journey.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the 2026 Hajj exercise is well-organised and beneficial to all participants. Officials noted that adequate planning and coordination remain key priorities.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the measures put in place will contribute to a smooth and successful pilgrimage. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery for Lagos residents participating in international religious engagements.
