The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) has reinforced its commitment to workforce development with the successful completion of a three-day performance enhancement retreat.
Eko Hot News reports that the retreat, themed “Building a Resilient, Ethical and Performance-Driven Public Service Workforce,” was held at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria. The programme brought together staff members for intensive learning and engagement sessions.
The initiative focused on equipping junior and middle-level staff with the skills needed to drive efficiency and productivity.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mrs. Olabisi Akinpelu, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to building a capable workforce.

He noted that continuous capacity development remains key to achieving the Ministry’s goals. He added that innovation, accountability, and professionalism are essential for effective service delivery.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, Abiola Olowu, also addressed participants. He highlighted the importance of staff welfare and development in strengthening governance.
Olowu reiterated that the administration is focused on creating an enabling environment for public servants. He noted that empowered staff are critical to achieving sustainable progress.
In his goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary overseeing the Ministry, Abdulhafiz Toriola, emphasised the importance of human capital development. He stated that the retreat aligns with the state’s broader development priorities.
He explained that investing in staff capacity supports efficient and people-centred service delivery. This, he said, is essential for meeting the expectations of residents.

Delivering the keynote address, the Director-General of ASCON, Funke Femi Adepoju, described the retreat theme as timely. She stressed that resilience, ethics, and performance are critical for maintaining public trust.
Adepoju encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained in their daily responsibilities. She noted that strong institutional values are key to effective governance.
The retreat featured sessions led by experts in various fields. Topics covered included ethics, performance management, and stress management.
Participants were equipped with practical tools to improve productivity and workplace effectiveness. The sessions also focused on strengthening accountability within the public service.
An interactive session with the Permanent Secretary provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange. Participants engaged in discussions that reinforced key lessons from the programme.
As part of the retreat, participants visited notable locations in Badagry. These included the Badagry Farm Settlement, Suntan Beach, and the Palace of the Akran of Badagry.

The visits added a cultural and experiential dimension to the programme. They also provided an opportunity for team bonding and reflection.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Akinpelu reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to continuous training. She noted that such initiatives are essential for building institutional capacity.
She added that the retreat aligns with the Lagos State Government’s vision of a modern public service. The goal is to create a responsive and globally competitive workforce.
