The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has launched the “Library on the Lagoon” initiative to address pollution and environmental challenges affecting the Lagos Lagoon.
Eko Hot News reports that the one-week initiative will run from April 26 to May 2, 2026. It will take place at the Five Cowries Creek Terminal, bringing together residents and stakeholders for environmental engagement activities.
The project is being executed in collaboration with Iranti Press and A Whitespace Creative Arts Foundation.
The programme is designed to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices. It also aims to strengthen community involvement in protecting Lagos’ aquatic ecosystems.

Speaking on the initiative, the General Manager of LASEPA, Babatunde Ajayi, called on residents to participate actively. He noted that the project focuses on preserving the lagoon and improving environmental safety.
Ajayi emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in addressing pollution. He stated that public participation is key to ensuring long-term sustainability of the lagoon.
He added that the initiative also supports the future of water transportation in Lagos. Protecting the lagoon, he said, is essential for maintaining safe and efficient water-based mobility.
Participation in the programme is open to the public at no cost. However, interested individuals are required to register to take part in the activities.
The Director of the project, Maryam Kazeem, explained that the initiative targets various groups. These include water transport users, picnickers, and riverine communities.

She noted that the project aims to raise awareness about pollution caused by plastic waste, sewage, and indiscriminate dumping. It encourages residents to take responsibility for protecting the lagoon.
Kazeem described the initiative as a blend of environmental action and community engagement. Participants are encouraged to reflect on the state of the lagoon and their role in preserving it.
A key feature of the project is an interactive typewriter installation. The device powers a trash collection wheel, allowing participants to contribute to clean-up efforts while sharing their ideas.
She added that the initiative highlights the historical and environmental importance of the Lagos Lagoon. It also promotes sustainable practices through creative engagement.

Also speaking, the Director of Partnerships, Grants Management and Innovations at LASEPA, Shonibare Olabisi, emphasised the value of collaboration. She noted that partnerships are essential for addressing environmental challenges.
Olabisi stated that innovative projects like this help build a culture of environmental responsibility. They also support long-term sustainability goals across the state.
The initiative reflects LASEPA’s commitment to engaging the public in environmental protection. It also demonstrates the role of creative approaches in driving awareness.

Residents are expected to benefit from the knowledge and experiences shared during the programme. The initiative provides practical ways to contribute to environmental preservation.
The “Library on the Lagoon” project underscores the importance of community-driven solutions. It highlights the need for consistent action in protecting Lagos’ natural resources.
