LAWMA has intensified its clampdown on environmental offences with the arrest of an individual caught dumping waste illegally at an unauthorised location in Tinubu Square, Lagos Island, during the early hours of Sunday.
Eko Hot News reports that the arrest was carried out by officers of the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement unit in collaboration with the LAWMA Waste Policing Team during a routine patrol operation.
The enforcement exercise forms part of LAWMA’s ongoing efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and ensure strict compliance with the state’s environmental sanitation laws, particularly in high-traffic and historic areas of Lagos Island.
Officials of the agency disclosed that Tinubu Square has been identified as a sensitive public space requiring constant monitoring to prevent environmental degradation and maintain cleanliness for residents, commuters, and visitors.

LAWMA reiterated that illegal dumping not only defaces public spaces but also poses serious health and environmental risks, especially in densely populated commercial districts such as Lagos Island.
The agency warned that offenders would continue to face arrest and prosecution, stressing that ignorance of the law would not be accepted as an excuse for violating waste management regulations.

Residents and businesses were again urged to patronise registered waste service providers and dispose of refuse only at approved locations to support the state’s drive for a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
LAWMA further assured the public of sustained surveillance, enforcement, and community engagement to promote responsible waste disposal and environmental stewardship across the state.
