LASG Promotes Green E-Commerce

The Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment has called on businesses to adopt sustainable e-commerce practices, eco-friendly packaging and responsible logistics to enhance competitiveness and support economic growth.

Eko Hot News reports that the appeal was made during the third edition of E-COMAGIBUS 2026 held at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja. The conference was themed “Eco-Friendly Packaging and Sustainable Logistics in E-Commerce.”

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Bada Ambrose-Medebem, said sustainable commerce and digital innovation are becoming essential drivers of modern economic development.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Babatunde Onigbanjo, the commissioner described the conference as an important platform for promoting innovation, collaboration and responsible business practices.

She noted that the rapid growth of e-commerce has created new opportunities for entrepreneurship, employment and business expansion across Nigeria.

According to the commissioner, the increasing demand for online commerce also places greater responsibility on businesses to adopt environmentally responsible packaging, transportation and delivery systems.

She stressed that the convenience of digital commerce should be balanced with sustainable production methods that protect the environment while supporting business growth.

Ambrose-Medebem said companies that embrace recyclable and biodegradable packaging materials are better positioned to meet changing consumer expectations.

She explained that sustainable logistics and environmentally friendly production practices also help businesses reduce operating costs and improve access to international markets.

The commissioner described sustainability as more than an environmental responsibility, saying it has become an important strategy for long-term profitability and competitiveness.

She highlighted Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s commercial centre, noting that the state contributes more than 30 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product despite occupying less than one per cent of Nigeria’s landmass.

According to her, Lagos has maintained its economic leadership through strategic government policies, investments in infrastructure, technology, innovation and an enabling business environment.

She credited the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and its THEMES Plus Agenda for strengthening the state’s business climate.

The commissioner urged stronger collaboration among government agencies, manufacturers, logistics providers, financial institutions, innovators and consumers to advance sustainable commerce.

She encouraged participants to translate discussions from the conference into practical policies, partnerships and measurable actions that will strengthen Lagos’ economy.

In his welcome address, Permanent Secretary Babatunde Onigbanjo commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for supporting initiatives that promote economic growth, infrastructure renewal and innovation.

His remarks, delivered by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Hauwa Adeeyo, highlighted the importance of sustainability in the expanding digital economy.

Onigbanjo said the conference theme reflects the growing need for governments, businesses and citizens to embrace environmentally responsible practices as online commerce continues to expand.

He explained that the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy presents significant opportunities for innovation in packaging, warehousing, transportation and last-mile delivery.

The permanent secretary also emphasised the importance of improving resource efficiency while reducing environmental impact through sustainable business operations.

He referenced the Lagos State Development Plan 2052 and the government’s ban on Styrofoam food packs and selected single-use plastics as practical examples of the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Onigbanjo encouraged Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to view sustainability as a competitive advantage capable of attracting investment and expanding market opportunities.

He also called on development partners, industry associations and private sector stakeholders to continue supporting government efforts to promote responsible commerce.

Speaking at the conference, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, said sustainable economic growth depends on strategic investments and strong collaboration among stakeholders.

She noted that achieving lasting environmental and economic progress requires both effective government policies and active participation from businesses and communities.

Participants at the conference explored practical solutions aimed at improving sustainable packaging, logistics and digital commerce across Lagos.

Industry experts also shared insights on emerging technologies and innovative business models that support environmentally responsible operations.

The conference concluded with renewed calls for businesses to embrace sustainability as a pathway to innovation, resilience and long-term economic prosperity.

Officials expressed confidence that the outcomes of E-COMAGIBUS 2026 would strengthen Lagos’ position as Africa’s leading destination for sustainable commerce, digital innovation and responsible enterprise development.
