The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments through a sensitisation programme for teachers and students in public secondary schools.
Eko Hot News reports that the initiative was organised by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in collaboration with the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development.
The awareness programme took place at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium and brought together education stakeholders, government officials, teachers, and students from public secondary schools across the state.
The event focused on raising awareness about sexual and gender-based violence, bullying, cultism, and drug abuse while promoting responsible behaviour and positive values among students.
Speaking during the programme, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe spaces where every child can learn and thrive.
He stressed that protecting students requires the collective efforts of parents, teachers, government institutions, communities, and other stakeholders.
According to the commissioner, education goes beyond academic achievement and should also nurture responsible, confident, disciplined, and morally upright citizens.
He encouraged teachers to remain vigilant, compassionate, and professional in handling reports of bullying, intimidation, or any form of abuse involving students.
The commissioner urged educators to treat every complaint seriously and ensure that learners feel heard, respected, and protected within the school environment.
He also advised students to speak up whenever they experience or witness inappropriate behaviour and to support classmates who may need help.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, said the programme reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to providing a secure and inclusive educational environment.
She noted that every child deserves to feel safe, respected, and empowered throughout their educational journey.
The Permanent Secretary encouraged parents and guardians to remain actively involved in their children’s lives by monitoring both online and offline activities while maintaining open communication.
She also commended the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development for their continued partnership in advancing child protection initiatives.
Resource persons at the programme educated participants on recognising different forms of abuse, the effects of bullying, the dangers of cultism and substance abuse, and the importance of seeking timely support.
The facilitators also introduced available reporting channels and support services designed to assist students and teachers whenever concerns arise.
Participants described the programme as an important platform for strengthening awareness, encouraging responsible conduct, and promoting a culture of mutual respect within schools.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed that it will continue collaborating with stakeholders to safeguard students, strengthen child protection policies, and create learning environments where every young person can achieve their full potential.
